Michelle Williams was born Tenitra Michelle Williams on July 23, 1979, in Rockford, Illinois. She began her musical career singing in church and in gospel groups such as United Harmony and Chosen Expression. She later rose to fame as a member of the R&B group Destiny’s Child. Williams publicly identifies as a Christian and has led worship at events including Liberty University Convocation.
Williams released her debut solo gospel album, Heart to Yours, in 2002. The album topped the US Gospel Albums chart, and Billboard ranked her as the fifth Top Gospel Artist of that year. She also won a MOBO Award for "Best Gospel Act" in 2002 and is a Stellar Award winner. She followed with a second gospel album, Do You Know, in 2004.
In 2008, Williams released Unexpected, a pop-oriented album featuring songs such as "We Break the Dawn" and "The Greatest." She returned to gospel and inspirational music with Journey to Freedom in 2014, which includes the songs "Say Yes" and "If We Had Your Eyes." Beyond her recording career, Williams has starred in Broadway and stage productions, including Aida, The Color Purple, and Chicago. Her solo discography encompasses both gospel and pop studio albums.
