Mavis Staples

Mavis Staples, a foundational voice in gospel music, was born on July 10, 1939, in Chicago, Illinois. She began her professional music career in 1950 as a member of her family’s group, The Staple Singers. The group was rooted in gospel music and later became deeply involved in the civil rights movement, recording classics such as “Uncloudy Day,” “I’ll Take You There,” “Let’s Do It Again,” and “Respect Yourself.”

Staples launched her solo career with her self-titled debut album in 1969. She has since built a distinguished body of work, including the albums You Are Not Alone (2010), which reached number one on the Billboard Top Gospel Albums chart, One True Vine, Livin’ on a High Note, and Sad and Beautiful World. Her solo recordings earned her five solo Grammy Awards.

Among her many honors, Staples received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award as a member of The Staple Singers and was awarded the National Heritage Fellowship in 2006. She was named a Kennedy Center Honoree in 2016. Staples has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (1999) and the Gospel Music Hall of Fame (2018). She is the last surviving member of The Staple Singers, carrying forward a legacy that bridges gospel, soul, and the enduring spirit of a family group that sang for both faith and justice.
