Love Song

Love Song was formed in 1970 in Costa Mesa, California, and quickly became a prominent part of the Jesus People Revival. The group is recognized as one of the first Christian rock bands, helping to shape the emerging sound of contemporary Christian music. Founding members included Chuck Girard, Tommy Coomes, Jay Truax, and Fred Field, with drummer John Mehler and guitarist Bob Wall also joining the early lineup.

The band’s music blended folk, rock, pop, and country styles, giving their songs a warm, accessible feel. Their catalog includes well-known tracks such as “A Love Song,” “Little Country Church,” “Welcome Back,” “Since I Opened Up The Door,” and “Let Us Be One.” These songs became anthems for a generation exploring faith through a fresh musical lens.

Love Song released three albums during their original run: the self-titled Love Song (1972), Final Touch (1974), and the live recording Feel the Love (1977). The 1972 debut album is frequently cited as a classic in the contemporary Christian music genre and was later included on CCM Magazine’s list of the 25 greatest contemporary Christian music albums of all time.

The group has reunited for various performances over the years, including a 2010 box set release that celebrated their enduring contribution to Christian rock.
