About Karen Clark Sheard
Karen Clark Sheard is a gospel singer, songwriter, and a member of the legendary gospel group The Clark Sisters. She was born Karen Valencia Clark on November 15, 1960, in Detroit, Michigan, to Reverend Elbert Clark and Dr. Mattie Moss Clark, a renowned gospel choral director. As the youngest member of The Clark Sisters, which formed in 1973, she helped shape the group’s signature sound before launching her own solo career.
She released her debut solo album, Finally Karen, in 1997, which included the song “Balm in Gilead.” Further solo projects followed: 2nd Chance (2002), The Heavens Are Telling (2003), It’s Not Over (2006), All in One (2010), Destined to Win (2015), and Still Karen (2024). Alongside her husband, J. Drew Sheard, she co-founded the record label Karew Records. She is also the mother of gospel singer and actress Kierra “Kiki” Sheard.
Her contributions to gospel music have been recognized with multiple awards. She won the Grammy Award for Best Gospel Song in 2008 as a songwriter for “Blessed & Highly Favored,” and she won the Grammy for Best Gospel Performance in 2010 for “Wait on the Lord,” a collaboration with Donnie McClurkin. She is also a recipient of several Stellar Awards and GMA Dove Awards.
In addition to her music career, Karen Clark Sheard serves as the First Lady of the Church of God in Christ (COGIC) denomination. Known for her multi-octave vocal range, she has been cited as an influence by various artists in gospel and beyond.
