Joseph Mohr

Joseph Mohr (1792–1848) was an Austrian Catholic priest and the lyricist of the beloved Christmas hymn “Silent Night.” Born in Salzburg, Austria, on December 11, 1792, he showed musical promise early in life, serving as a singer and violinist in church choirs as a youth. His education and musical training were supported by Johann Nepomuk Hiernle, a vicar at Salzburg Cathedral.

Mohr was ordained as a priest in the Roman Catholic Church in 1815. Over the course of his ministry, he served in several Austrian parishes, including Mariapfarr, Oberndorf, Hintersee, and Wagrain. It was during his time as a priest that he wrote the German text for “Stille Nacht” (“Silent Night”), a carol that would become one of the most widely sung Christmas songs in the world.

Joseph Mohr died on December 4, 1848, in Wagrain, Austria. His enduring contribution to Christian hymnody remains the simple yet profound poem that, set to music by his friend Franz Xaver Gruber, has been cherished by congregations for generations.
