Isaac Watts

Isaac Watts (1674–1748) was an English Congregational minister, theologian, and hymn writer widely regarded as the "Father of English Hymnody." Born in Southampton, England, he was raised in a Nonconformist family. Beginning in 1702, he served as the pastor of the Mark Lane Independent Chapel in London. Watts is credited with writing approximately 600 to 750 hymns and introducing a new approach to congregational singing by adapting the Psalms and writing original hymns from a Christian perspective. His notable publications include Hymns and Spiritual Songs (1707) and The Psalms of David Imitated in the Language of the New Testament (1719). Beyond music, he authored educational textbooks on subjects including logic, geography, and astronomy, as well as a collection of religious songs for children titled Divine Songs for the Use of Children (1715).

Watts’s enduring hymnody includes well-known works such as “When I Survey the Wondrous Cross,” “Joy to the World,” “O God, Our Help in Ages Past,” and “Jesus Shall Reign Where’er the Sun.” Other hymns in his catalog are “Alas and Did My Saviour Bleed,” “Am I a Soldier of the Cross,” “Come, We That Love the Lord,” and “I Sing the Mighty Power of God.” These hymns remain central to Christian worship in many traditions.

Watts played a transformative role in 18th-century English church music, moving the practice of congregational singing beyond strict metrical psalmody toward the composition and use of original hymns. His theological motivation was to make Christian worship more accessible and personal for believers, a shift that shaped the development of hymnody across the English-speaking world.
