About Heather Headley
Heather Headley is a Grammy Award-winning gospel artist whose career has also encompassed acclaimed work on Broadway and in R&B music. Born on October 5, 1974, in Trinidad and Tobago, she moved to Fort Wayne, Indiana, at age 15 when her father became a pastor. She attended Northwestern University to study musical theatre.
Headley originated the role of Nala in the Broadway musical The Lion King and later won the 2000 Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical for her performance in Aida. She also received a Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Actress in a Musical for the same role. Her debut R&B album, This Is Who I Am, was released in 2002. She has since released albums including In My Mind, Only One in the World, and Broadway My Way.
In 2010, Headley won the Grammy Award for Best Contemporary R&B Gospel Album for Audience of One. Her gospel and contemporary Christian music work includes a collaboration on Vertical Worship albums. She has also appeared in television series including Chicago Med and Sweet Magnolias. Among her recorded songs are “He Is,” “I Wish I Wasn’t,” and “Yes I Will,” on which she is featured.
