About Gospel Gangstaz
Gospel Gangstaz is a Christian hip-hop group based in the Greater Los Angeles area. The group was founded in 1993 by Mr. Solo (Charles Washington), who turned to Christianity after surviving a gang-related shooting. The original members included Mr. Solo, Chille' Baby, and Tik Tokk. Many of the members were formerly affiliated with the Crips and Bloods gangs, and the group’s music and ministry focus on sharing the gospel of Christ with individuals who have troubled or violent pasts.
The group released their debut album Gang Affiliated in 1994, followed by Do or Die (1995), I Can See Clearly Now (1999), All Mixed Up (2000), The Exodus (2002), The Flood (2006), and Street Disciples (2011). Over the years, they collaborated with gospel artists including Kirk Franklin and Mary Mary.
I Can See Clearly Now received a Grammy nomination for Best Rock Gospel Album. The album also reached number three on the Billboard Top Gospel Albums chart, number eleven on the Top Christian Albums chart, and number twenty-five on the Top Heatseekers chart. The group has additionally received nominations for Dove and Stellar Awards.
Mr. Solo passed away on May 22, 2020. The Gospel Gangstaz remain recognized as pioneers in Christian hip-hop, known for their testimony-driven music aimed at reaching those from backgrounds similar to their own.
