George Nooks

George Nooks (born around 1958/1960 in Kingston, Jamaica) is a singer, songwriter, and producer whose career has spanned reggae, lovers rock, and gospel music. He first sang in his church’s youth choir before gaining attention in the 1970s as a deejay under the name Prince Mohammed, releasing songs such as “Tribal War” and “Forty Leg Dread.” In the early 1990s he founded his own label, Total Records.

Nooks’ turn toward gospel became pronounced with his 2001 cover of Al Green’s “God Is Standing By,” a recording that marked a significant shift in his musical direction. He continued to record gospel material, including albums such as Ride Out Your Storm, Through It All, and Give Thanks. His catalog also includes gospel standards “How Great Thou Art” and “Love Lifted Me.”

His work gained recognition beyond the Caribbean. Ride Out Your Storm reached number 4 on the Billboard Reggae Albums chart and number 22 on the Billboard Gospel chart. His single “Real Man” peaked at number 55 on the Billboard R&B Singles Sales chart. In 2019, the Jamaica Reggae Industry Association (JaRIA) honored him with a Gospel Icon Award, reflecting his lasting impact on gospel music in the Jamaican context.
