George Duffield

George Duffield Jr. was a 19th-century American Presbyterian minister and hymnodist. He was born in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, on September 12, 1818. Duffield graduated from Yale College in 1837 and from Union Theological Seminary in 1840.

Throughout his career, he served as a pastor in several cities, including Brooklyn, Philadelphia, and Ann Arbor. He also served as an editor for the Presbyterian journal, the Christian Observer. An abolitionist, Duffield advocated for the cause of the oppressed during the American Civil War.

Duffield is best known for writing the hymn "Stand Up, Stand Up for Jesus." The hymn was inspired by the dying words of his friend and fellow minister, the Reverend Dudley Atkins Tyng.
