About DC Talk
DC Talk is a Christian music group formed in 1987 at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia. The original members were Toby McKeehan, Michael Tait, and Kevin Max Smith. The name originally referred to Washington, D.C., but later came to stand for "decent Christian talk."
The group released five major studio albums: DC Talk (1989), Nu Thang (1990), Free at Last (1992), Jesus Freak (1995), and Supernatural (1998). Their musical style evolved from hip-hop in their early releases to pop rock and alternative rock in later albums. In 1993, they became one of the first contemporary Christian groups to perform on late-night television, appearing on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.
Jesus Freak (1995) reached No. 16 on the Billboard 200 and was certified double platinum by the RIAA. The group won a Grammy Award for Best Rock Gospel Album for Free at Last in 1994 and again for Jesus Freak in 1997. Free at Last was certified platinum in 1995.
The group entered an indefinite hiatus in 2000 to pursue solo careers, though they never formally disbanded. Their catalog also includes the live album Solo (2000) and popular songs such as "Jesus Is Just Alright" (1992) and "Jesus Freak" (1995).
