Chevelle Franklyn

Chevelle Franklyn is a Jamaican gospel and worship artist who made a significant transition from a successful secular reggae career to a full-time ministry in Christian music. She was born Chevelle Jasintha Franklyn on March 4, 1974, in the Tawes Pen area of Spanish Town, Jamaica. She began her music career as a teenager, recording her first single, "Here I Am," at age 14. During the 1990s, she became well known as a reggae artist with hits such as "Nice and Naughty" and notable collaborations, including "Mr. Lover Man" with Shabba Ranks and "Dancehall Queen" with Beenie Man.

In 1998, during a live concert, Franklyn announced her conversion to Christianity and committed to recording gospel music exclusively. Her first gospel album, Joy, was released in 2001. She followed with a series of albums including His Way (2006), Shake It Off (2008), Set Time (2017), and South Wind Vol. 1 (2020). Her album Set Time peaked at number twelve on the Billboard Reggae Album chart. She has collaborated with prominent gospel artists such as Israel Houghton and Donnie McClurkin. Franklyn was featured on Israel Houghton’s album The Power of One, which won the 2010 Grammy Award for Best Pop/Contemporary Gospel Album. She also recorded the song "Go In Your Strength" and "No Foreign God" among her catalog.

Her contributions to gospel music have earned her widespread recognition. In 2002, she won five Caribbean Gospel Music Marlin Awards. She received the Reggae Academy Award for Best Solo Female Vocal Gospel Artist in 2008 and the African Gospel Music and Media Awards (AGMMA) Special Inspirational Award in 2013. The ABGMA awarded her Song of the Year in 2018 and International Psalmist of the Year in both 2019 and 2021. Franklyn has also performed internationally, including a notable appearance at "The Experience" in Lagos, Nigeria.
