About Candi Staton
Candi Staton began her career singing gospel as a child with the Jewell Gospel Trio, which toured the gospel circuit in the 1950s. Born Canzetta Maria Staton on March 13, 1940, in Hanceville, Alabama, she launched a solo R&B career in 1968 with FAME Studios and earned the title “First Lady of Southern Soul.” She achieved international success in the 1970s with disco hits, including “Young Hearts Run Free,” which reached No. 1 on the US R&B charts in 1976. Her earlier single “Stand by Your Man” (1970) was certified as a gold record, and she also recorded “I’m Just a Prisoner (Of Your Good Lovin’)” that same year.
In 1982, Staton returned to gospel music and co-founded Beracah Ministries in Atlanta, Georgia. She has since recorded twelve gospel albums and been inducted into the Christian Music Hall of Fame. Among her gospel releases are “You Got the Love” (1986, with The Source), “Mama” (1995), His Hands (2006), and Unstoppable (2018). Across her entire career, she has received five Grammy Award nominations.
In 2025, Staton released her 32nd album, Back to My Roots, which earned a nomination for Best Roots Gospel Album of the Year at the 68th Annual Grammy Awards. Her journey from the gospel circuit to Southern soul and disco and back to her gospel roots marks a career that has spanned multiple genres while remaining anchored in her early faith foundation.
