About Barry McGuire
Barry McGuire was born on October 15, 1935, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and moved to California during his early childhood. Before pursuing music, he worked as a commercial fisherman and a journeyman pipe fitter. In 1962 he joined the folk group The New Christy Minstrels, performing on the hit song “Green, Green.” He left the group in 1965 and achieved fame as a solo artist later that year with “Eve of Destruction,” a song that sold more than one million copies, earned a gold disc, and reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
McGuire became a born-again Christian in 1971 and emerged as a prominent figure in the “Jesus music” movement, which later developed into Contemporary Christian Music. He signed with the Myrrh record label in 1973 and released a series of albums including Seeds (1973), Lighten Up (1974), and To the Bride (1975). He also took on the role of the apostle Peter in the musical The Witness, which was released as an album in 1978 alongside Bullfrogs and Butterflies.
Between 1996 and 2000, McGuire recorded several albums as part of the duo Talbot McGuire with Terry Talbot. Throughout his career he remained tied to the Christian music community, with his earlier folk-rock background giving way to a sustained focus on songs of faith.
