Aaron Joseph Neville was born on January 24, 1941, in New Orleans, Louisiana. He is a singer known for his tenor voice and a genre-crossing career including R&B, soul, gospel, jazz, country, and pop. He gained national prominence with his 1966 single “Tell It Like It Is.” He is a founding member of the Neville Brothers, a group formed with his brothers Art, Charles, and Cyril.
Throughout his career, Neville has earned four Grammy Awards. His 1966 single “Tell It Like It Is” was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. In the 1990s, he achieved three consecutive RIAA platinum-selling solo albums. He also recorded duets with Linda Ronstadt, including “Don’t Know Much” and “All My Life,” and collaborated with the Dirty Dozen Brass Band on “Stompin’ Ground.”
Neville is a devout Catholic and has frequently credited his faith and devotion to St. Jude for his success and survival. He has released albums specifically focused on spiritual and gospel music, such as Devotion (2000) and Believe (2003). He also released Nature Boy: The Standards Album in 2003. In 2015, he received the Laetare Medal from the University of Notre Dame.
