Lyrics

I heard an old, old story, how a Savior came from glory
How He gave His life on Calvary to save a wretch like me
I heard about His groaning, of His precious blood's atoning
Then I repented of my sins and won the victory

Chorus:
Oh victory in Jesus (victory in Jesus), my Savior (my Savior) forever (forever)
He sought me and He bought me with His redeeming blood (He bought me with His blood)
(He loved me 'ere I knew Him) He loved me 'ere I knew Him (and all my love is due Him) and all my love is due Him
He plunged me to victory beneath the cleansing flood

I heard about His healing, of His cleansing power revealing
How He made the lame to walk again and He caused the blind to see
(I cried out, "Dear Jesus") And then I cried, "Dear Jesus, (come and heal my broken spirit) come and heal my broken spirit"
I then obeyed His blest command and gained the victory

Repeat Chorus

The flood...

I heard about a mansion He has built for me in glory
And I heard about the street of gold beyond the crystal sea (beyond the crystal sea)
(The angels singing) About the angels singing (the old redemption story) and the old redemption story
Oh and some sweet day I'll sing up there the song of victory

Repeat Chorus (x2)

(Don't you know) He plunged me to victory beneath the cleansing flood
(I said) He plunged me to victory beneath the cleansing flood

I've got a victory in Jesus
You've got a victory in Jesus

Meaning & Inspiration

I’ve been sitting here for a while, staring at the wall, just letting Acappella’s version of "Victory in Jesus" loop in the background. It’s one of those hymns that feels like it’s been stitched into the fabric of the church since the beginning, but hearing it stripped down to just voices—no instruments, no safety net of a band—changes the texture of it.

I don't know, maybe I’m just in a mood, but "I heard an old, old story" hits different when you aren’t just singing it on autopilot. It’s a heavy claim. We talk about "victory" so easily in Sunday service, but when they sing, "How He gave His life on Calvary to save a wretch like me," I have to pause. Am I really holding that truth, or am I just humming along to a catchy melody?

There’s this tension in the lyrics that I think we often skip over. The song talks about being a "wretch" and needing that "cleansing flood." It’s an acknowledgment that there was a state of defeat before there could be a victory. I look at my own life, and some days it doesn’t feel like I’m walking in victory. Some days I feel like I’m just trying to keep my head above water. When they sing, "He loved me 'ere I knew Him," it’s comforting, but it’s also disorienting. It suggests that my standing with God has nothing to do with my performance and everything to do with His initiative. That’s a hard pill to swallow for someone like me, someone who wants to earn their keep.

And then there’s the line, "I then obeyed His blest command and gained the victory." That’s where I get stuck. It feels like a paradox. We’re saved by grace, bought with His blood—Acts 20:28 confirms that clearly—but there’s a response required. There’s an obedience that follows the healing. It makes me wonder if my lack of "victory" lately is just a lack of obedience on my part. Is it really that simple? Is it just crying out, "Dear Jesus, come and heal my broken spirit," and then listening for the next step?

Acappella’s arrangement is so clean, so precise, that it exposes the lyrics. There’s nowhere to hide behind a guitar solo or a heavy drum beat. It’s just the raw declaration of the Gospel. It forces me to consider the "mansion He has built for me in glory." It sounds nice, like a promise for the future, but it makes me ask if I’m actually living for that reality, or if I’m just living for the next hour, the next day, the next frustration.

I’m not entirely sure I have it all figured out. In fact, I’m pretty sure I don’t. But there’s something undeniably anchoring about these words. Whether or not I feel like a victor in this moment, the song asserts that the victory was already won on Calvary. Maybe I just need to stop wrestling with my own adequacy and start leaning into that "cleansing flood" they keep singing about. It’s a lot to chew on. I think I need to sit with it for a few more days, maybe listen to it again when things aren't quite so quiet. There's a lot of truth in these voices, and I'm still trying to let it sink into the places where I usually try to keep my guard up.
