Can We Contribute to Our Own Salvation?

When it comes to the question of salvation, there are two perspectives to consider: the practical and the biblical. From a practical standpoint, let's imagine if it were possible for us to contribute something to our own salvation. In such a scenario, who would receive the credit in heaven? If we had a role to play in our salvation, it would mean that we deserve the credit, which would diminish God's glory. The idea of people in heaven praising themselves for their own efforts is inconceivable. God clearly states in Isaiah 42:8, "I will not give my glory to another."

Looking at it from a biblical perspective, it becomes evident that mankind has nothing to contribute to their salvation. Scripture teaches us about the concept of total depravity – the belief that humanity is inherently sinful and incapable of earning God's favor. Due to this sinful nature, mankind has a natural inclination to reject God and indulge in sin (Romans 1:18-32). It is important to acknowledge our fallen state and recognize that we are powerless to save ourselves.

Recognizing our desperate need for salvation, God intervened on our behalf by sending Jesus Christ as our mediator (1 Timothy 2:5). Jesus' sacrificial death serves as the perfect substitution for our sins (1 Timothy 2:6). It is through faith in Jesus that we can be justified, declared righteous before God (Romans 5:1). This justification is not something we can achieve on our own; it is a gift from God (Ephesians 2:8-9).

Substitution

Justification

Romans 3:24 tells us, "And are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus." Justification is not something we can earn or achieve through our own efforts. It is a gift freely given to us by God's grace.

Redemption

Through Jesus' sacrificial death, we are redeemed from the bondage of sin. 1 Peter 1:18-19 explains, "Knowing that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your forefathers, not with perishable things such as silver or gold, but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot." Our redemption is not based on our own merits or possessions but on the precious blood of Christ.

These biblical references highlight the fact that salvation is entirely a work of God. We cannot contribute anything to our salvation, nor can we earn it. It is a free gift from God, available to us through faith in Jesus Christ (Romans 6:23). We simply need to accept this gift and believe in His name (John 1:12).

It is crucial to understand that even faith itself is a gift from God. We cannot manufacture faith on our own; it is the Holy Spirit who enables us to believe (Ephesians 2:8-9). Our role in salvation is simply to receive and embrace the gift that God offers us.
