About Owl City
Owl City is an American electronic music project created in 2007 by singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Adam Young. Born on July 5, 1986, in Ottumwa, Iowa, and raised in Owatonna, Minnesota, Young started making music in his parents’ basement as a way to cope with insomnia. The project’s sound blends electronica, synth-pop, and indietronica, and it first gained an audience through the social networking site Myspace. In 2008, Owl City signed with Universal Republic Records.
Young is a devout Christian who says his faith is central to his life and influences his music, though he has long positioned Owl City as a mainstream project rather than an explicitly Christian one. Alongside his work as Owl City, he has recorded under other names such as Sky Sailing, Port Blue, and his own name.
Owl City’s early releases include the EP Of June (2007) and the album Maybe I’m Dreaming (2008). The project’s mainstream breakthrough came with the 2009 album Ocean Eyes, which was certified 2× Platinum in the United States. Its lead single, “Fireflies,” reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and was certified Diamond by the RIAA in January 2023. Young followed with albums including All Things Bright and Beautiful (2011), The Midsummer Station (2012)—which featured the hit single “Good Time”—and Coco Moon (2023).
