Commissioned was an American urban contemporary gospel group formed in 1982 in Detroit, Michigan. The group’s name was drawn from the “Great Commission” of Christ, reflecting its members’ shared commitment to spreading the gospel through music. Original members included Fred Hammond, Keith Staten, Mitchell Jones, Karl Reid, Michael Brooks, and Michael Williams.
Over a seventeen-year recording career, Commissioned released twelve albums, fusing traditional gospel quartet-style harmonies with R&B-influenced instrumentals. This blend helped shape the urban contemporary gospel sound, appealing to both church congregations and broader audiences. Key releases included I’m Going On (1985), Shakin’ The House (Live!) (1991), Matters Of The Heart (1994), and Time & Seasons (1999).
Several notable artists passed through the group’s lineup over the years, including Marvin Sapp, Marcus Cole, Montrell Darrett, Maxx Frank, and Eddie Howard, Jr. In 2002, Commissioned reunited for a tour and a live album, The Commissioned Reunion Live, which sold more than 100,000 copies. The group earned nominations for both Grammy and Stellar awards during its active years, leaving a lasting mark on gospel music through its vocal excellence and evangelistic focus.
