The Book of Matthew

Matthew Outline

Chapters & Genres

The Gospel of Matthew is one of the four canonical gospels in the New Testament of the Holy Bible. It is the first book in the New Testament and was written by Matthew, a tax collector who became one of Jesus' twelve apostles. The Gospel of Matthew is believed to have been written in the late 1st century, around 70-80 AD, and was originally written in Greek.

The Gospel of Matthew is divided into 28 chapters and is primarily focused on the life, teachings, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The book begins with the genealogy of Jesus, tracing his lineage back to Abraham and David, and then proceeds to describe the circumstances surrounding his birth, including the visit of the Magi and the flight to Egypt to escape Herod's wrath.

The book then moves into Jesus' ministry, where he preaches the gospel, performs miracles, and teaches his disciples. One of the most famous sections of the Gospel of Matthew is the Sermon on the Mount, where Jesus delivers his most famous teachings, including the Beatitudes and the Lord's Prayer.

Throughout the book, Jesus is depicted as a powerful and compassionate leader who is committed to his mission of saving humanity from sin and death. He is often shown performing miracles, such as healing the sick, calming the storm, and even raising the dead. These miracles are meant to demonstrate Jesus' divine power and serve as a sign of his authority.

Alongside these miracles, Jesus also spends a great deal of time teaching his disciples and the crowds that follow him. His teachings often focus on the importance of faith, love, and forgiveness, and he uses parables to illustrate his points. The Gospel of Matthew also contains several well-known parables, including the Parable of the Sower, the Parable of the Talents, and the Parable of the Prodigal Son.

Despite his popularity, Jesus faces opposition from various groups, including the religious leaders of his time. They accuse him of blasphemy and heresy, which ultimately leads to his arrest, trial, and crucifixion. However, the book also describes Jesus' resurrection from the dead, which serves as the ultimate proof of his divinity and the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecies.

Throughout the Gospel of Matthew, there is a strong emphasis on the importance of following Jesus and living according to his teachings. This is seen in the various moral and ethical teachings that are found throughout the book, including the command to love one's neighbor as oneself and the call to take up one's cross and follow Jesus.

The Gospel of Matthew also contains several unique features that set it apart from the other gospels. For example, it is the only gospel that mentions the visit of the Magi, the flight to Egypt, and the massacre of the innocents. It also contains several long discourses by Jesus, including the Sermon on the Mount, the Olivet Discourse, and the Parable Discourse.

Overall, the Gospel of Matthew is a rich and complex text that provides a detailed account of the life and teachings of Jesus Christ. It is a powerful testament to his divinity and his mission to save humanity from sin and death. Through its teachings and stories, the Gospel of Matthew continues to inspire and guide believers around the world, offering a message of hope and salvation that is as relevant today as it was over two thousand years ago.
