Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(11) We are all one man's sons.--Joseph's brethren had probably expected this accusation, and their answer, as Abravanel points out, is a sound one: for no man would send his whole family on so dangerous an errand. And thus they press their family relations as a proof of their being true, that is, honest, just men, with no evil designs; and Joseph, who was glad in this way to obtain intelligence of his father and Benjamin, finally, after persisting in the accusation until he had learned all he wished to know, accepts their argument as valid.Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewWeנָ֑חְנוּ (nā·ḥə·nū)Pronoun - first person common pluralStrong's 5168: Weare allכֻּלָּ֕נוּ (kul·lā·nū)Noun - masculine singular construct | first person common pluralStrong's 3605: The whole, all, any, everysonsבְּנֵ֥י (bə·nê)Noun - masculine plural constructStrong's 1121: A sonof oneאֶחָ֖ד (’e·ḥāḏ)Number - masculine singularStrong's 259: United, one, firstman.אִישׁ־ (’îš-)Noun - masculine singularStrong's 376: A man as an individual, a male personYour servantsעֲבָדֶ֖יךָ (‘ă·ḇā·ḏe·ḵā)Noun - masculine plural construct | second person masculine singularStrong's 5650: Slave, servantareהָי֥וּ (hā·yū)Verb - Qal - Perfect - third person common pluralStrong's 1961: To fall out, come to pass, become, behonest [men],כֵּנִ֣ים (kê·nîm)Adjective - masculine pluralStrong's 3651: So -- thusnotלֹא־ (lō-)Adverb - Negative particleStrong's 3808: Not, nospies.”מְרַגְּלִֽים׃ (mə·rag·gə·lîm)Verb - Piel - Participle - masculine pluralStrong's 7270: To walk along, to reconnoiter, to be a, tale-bearer, to lead aboutJump to PreviousHonest Purpose Right Secret Servants Spies True.
