Ellicott's Commentary
Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(5) Overcome.--Marg., puffed up; Heb. hiribuni, from the verb rahab, a word whose root-idea seems to be to show spirit against oppression or prejudice. (See Isaiah 3:5; Proverbs 6:3.) The Hiphil therefore = make me spirited, or bold. (Comp. Psalm 138:3.) The LXX. and Vulg., however, followed by many moderns, take it in the sense of scare or dazzle. For the rest of the description, see Note, Song of Solomon 4:1, seqq.Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewTurn your eyesעֵינַ֙יִךְ֙ (‘ê·na·yiḵ)Noun - cdc | second person feminine singularStrong's 5869: An eye, a fountainawayהָסֵ֤בִּי (hā·sêb·bî)Verb - Hifil - Imperative - feminine singularStrong's 5437: To turn about, go around, surroundfromמִן־ (min-)PrepositionStrong's 4480: A part of, from, out ofme,מִנֶּגְדִּ֔י (min·neḡ·dî)Preposition-m | first person common singularStrong's 5048: A front, part opposite, a counterpart, mate, over against, beforefor theyשֶׁ֥הֵ֖ם (še·hêm)Pronoun - relative | Pronoun - third person masculine pluralStrong's 1992: Theyhave overcome me.הִרְהִיבֻ֑נִי (hir·hî·ḇu·nî)Verb - Hifil - Perfect - third person common plural | first person common singularStrong's 7292: To urge severely, importune, embolden, capture, act insolentlyYour hairשַׂעְרֵךְ֙ (śa‘·rêḵ)Noun - masculine singular construct | second person feminine singularStrong's 8181: Hairis like a flockכְּעֵ֣דֶר (kə·‘ê·ḏer)Preposition-k | Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 5739: An arrangement, musterof goatsהָֽעִזִּ֔ים (hā·‘iz·zîm)Article | Noun - feminine pluralStrong's 5795: Female goatstreaming downשֶׁגָּלְשׁ֖וּ (šeg·gā·lə·šū)Pronoun - relative | Verb - Qal - Perfect - third person common pluralStrong's 1570: To reclinefrom Gilead.הַגִּלְעָֽד׃ (hag·gil·‘āḏ)Article | Noun - proper - feminine singularStrong's 1568: Gilead -- a region in Palestine, also the name of several IsraelitesJump to PreviousAppear Confused Descended Descending Disturb Eyes Flock Gilead Goats Hair Lie Moving Overcome Overwhelm Proud Round Row Shone Side Slopes Trail Turn Turned
