Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(37) Thirty and two thousand and five hundred.--This shows a decrease of 8,000. Jacob foretold that Ephraim should be greater than Manasseh (Genesis 48:19); and at the former census the number of the Ephraimites was considerably greater than that of the Manassites (Numbers 1:33; Numbers 1:35), and Ephraim was made a standard-bearer (Numbers 2:18). At the present census, however, the number of the Manassites exceeded that of the Ephraimites by 20,200; and yet, in the face of the great increase of Manasseh and the diminution of Ephraim, Moses renewed and confirmed the prediction of Jacob as to the ultimate superiority of Ephraim, and whilst ascribing only "thousands" to Manasseh, he speaks of the "ten thousands of Ephraim" (Deuteronomy 33:17).Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewThese [were]אֵ֣לֶּה (’êl·leh)Pronoun - common pluralStrong's 428: These, thosethe clansמִשְׁפְּחֹ֤ת (miš·pə·ḥōṯ)Noun - feminine plural constructStrong's 4940: A family, circle of relatives, a class, a species, sort, a tribe, peopleof Ephraim,אֶפְרַ֙יִם֙ (’ep̄·ra·yim)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 669: Ephraim -- a son of Joseph, also his descendants and their territoryand their registration numberedלִפְקֻ֣דֵיהֶ֔ם (lip̄·qu·ḏê·hem)Preposition-l | Verb - Qal - QalPassParticiple - masculine plural construct | third person masculine pluralStrong's 6485: To visit, to oversee, muster, charge, care for, miss, deposit32,500שְׁנַ֧יִם (šə·na·yim)Number - mdStrong's 8147: Two (a cardinal number)Theseאֵ֥לֶּה (’êl·leh)Pronoun - common pluralStrong's 428: These, thoseclans [were]לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָֽם׃ (lə·miš·pə·ḥō·ṯām)Preposition-l | Noun - feminine plural construct | third person masculine pluralStrong's 4940: A family, circle of relatives, a class, a species, sort, a tribe, peoplethe descendantsבְנֵי־ (ḇə·nê-)Noun - masculine plural constructStrong's 1121: A sonof Joseph.יוֹסֵ֖ף (yō·w·sêp̄)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3130: Joseph -- 'he increases', a son of Jacob, also the name of several IsraelitesJump to PreviousClans Descendants Ephraim E'phraim Hundred Joseph Numbered Ones Thirty Thirty-Two Thousand
