Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(11) And he sprinkled thereof upon the altar seven times.--That is, the altar of burnt offering. This rite of sprinkling the altar seven times is not mentioned in the directions given in Exodus 30:28; Exodus 40:10. For the import of the number seven, see Leviticus 4:6.And anointed the altar and all his vessels.--That is, the same altar of burnt sacrifice. The altar, having thus been sanctified, was thenceforward considered as sanctifying the sacrifices and oblations offered upon it. Hence the remark of Christ, "Ye fools and blind, for whether is greater, the gift, or the altar that sanctifieth the gift ?" (Matthew 23:19).Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewHe sprinkledוַיַּ֥ז (way·yaz)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Hifil - Consecutive imperfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 5137: To spurt, spatter, sprinklesome ofמִמֶּ֛נּוּ (mim·men·nū)Preposition | third person masculine singularStrong's 4480: A part of, from, out ofthe oil onעַל־ (‘al-)PrepositionStrong's 5921: Above, over, upon, againstthe altarהַמִּזְבֵּ֖חַ (ham·miz·bê·aḥ)Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 4196: An altarsevenשֶׁ֣בַע (še·ḇa‘)Number - feminine singularStrong's 7651: Seven, seven times, a week, an indefinite numbertimes,פְּעָמִ֑ים (pə·‘ā·mîm)Noun - feminine pluralStrong's 6471: A beat, foot, anvil, occurrenceanointingוַיִּמְשַׁ֨ח (way·yim·šaḥ)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Consecutive imperfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 4886: To rub with oil, to anoint, to consecrate, to paintthe altarהַמִּזְבֵּ֜חַ (ham·miz·bê·aḥ)Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 4196: An altarand allכָּל־ (kāl-)Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 3605: The whole, all, any, everyits utensils,כֵּלָ֗יו (kê·lāw)Noun - masculine plural construct | third person masculine singularStrong's 3627: Something prepared, any apparatusand the basinהַכִּיֹּ֛ר (hak·kî·yōr)Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 3595: Pot, basinwith its stand,כַּנּ֖וֹ (kan·nōw)Noun - masculine singular construct | third person masculine singularStrong's 3653: A stand, pedestal, stationto consecrate them.לְקַדְּשָֽׁם׃ (lə·qad·də·šām)Preposition-l | Verb - Piel - Infinitive construct | third person masculine pluralStrong's 6942: To be set apart or consecratedJump to PreviousAltar Anointed Anointeth Anointing Base Basin Consecrate Foot Hallow Laver Oil Part Sanctify Seven Sprinkled Sprinkleth Stand Thereof Times Utensils Vessels
