Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(9) It is the burnt offering, because of the burning upon the altar.--Better, This, the burnt offering, shall he upon the fire on the altar. That is, the continued burnt offering, with which the sacrifices here enumerated begin, is to remain burning upon the altar from the evening until the morning. (Comp. Exodus 29:38-42; Numbers 28:1-8).Shall be burning in it.--Better, shall burn by it. That is, shall be fed and kept up by it. According to the practice which obtained during the second Temple, the fat pieces of the burnt offering began to be burned at midnight, thus feeding the fire till the break of day.Parallel Commentaries ...Hebrew“Commandצַ֤ו (ṣaw)Verb - Piel - Imperative - masculine singularStrong's 6680: To lay charge (upon), give charge (to), command, orderAaronאַהֲרֹן֙ (’a·hă·rōn)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 175: Aaron -- an elder brother of Mosesand his sons,בָּנָ֣יו (bā·nāw)Noun - masculine plural construct | third person masculine singularStrong's 1121: A son‘Thisזֹ֥את (zōṯ)Pronoun - feminine singularStrong's 2063: Hereby in it, likewise, the one other, same, she, so much, such deed, that, is the lawתּוֹרַ֖ת (tō·w·raṯ)Noun - feminine singular constructStrong's 8451: Direction, instruction, lawof the burnt offering:הָעֹלָ֑ה (hā·‘ō·lāh)Article | Noun - feminine singularStrong's 5930: Whole burnt offeringThe burnt offeringהָעֹלָ֡ה (hā·‘ō·lāh)Article | Noun - feminine singularStrong's 5930: Whole burnt offeringis to remainעַל֩ (‘al)PrepositionStrong's 5921: Above, over, upon, againstonעַל־ (‘al-)PrepositionStrong's 5921: Above, over, upon, againstthe hearthמוֹקְדָ֨ה (mō·wq·ḏāh)Noun - feminine singularStrong's 4169: Hearthof the altarהַמִּזְבֵּ֤חַ (ham·miz·bê·aḥ)Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 4196: An altarallכָּל־ (kāl-)Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 3605: The whole, all, any, everynight,הַלַּ֙יְלָה֙ (hal·lay·lāh)Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 3915: A twist, night, adversityuntilעַד־ (‘aḏ-)PrepositionStrong's 5704: As far as, even to, up to, until, whilemorning,הַבֹּ֔קֶר (hab·bō·qer)Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 1242: Dawn, morningand the fireוְאֵ֥שׁ (wə·’êš)Conjunctive waw | Noun - common singular constructStrong's 784: A firemust be kept burningתּ֥וּקַד (tū·qaḏ)Verb - Hofal - Imperfect - third person feminine singularStrong's 3344: To be kindled, to burnon the altar.הַמִּזְבֵּ֖חַ (ham·miz·bê·aḥ)Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 4196: An altarJump to PreviousAaron Altar Burning Burnt Burnt-Offering Command Fire Firewood Hearth Itself Kept Law Morning Night Offering
