Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(11) And he shall put off his garments.--That is, the priest shall change the sacred robes in which he ministered at the altar; for other garments, though less holy, were not common, since the removing of the ashes was still a sacerdotal function. The holy garments were deposited in the cells within the precincts of the sanctuary, till they were required again for the altar service (Ezekiel 44:19; Ezra 2:6; Ezra 2:9; Nehemiah 7:70). Great care was taken that the place to which the ashes were removed was well sheltered, so that the wind should not blow them about. The priest was not allowed to scatter them, but had to deposit them gently. No stranger was permitted to gather them, or to make profit by the ashes.Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewThen he must take offוּפָשַׁט֙ (ū·p̄ā·šaṭ)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Conjunctive perfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 6584: To strip off, make a dash, raidhis garments,בְּגָדָ֔יו (bə·ḡā·ḏāw)Noun - masculine plural construct | third person masculine singularStrong's 899: A covering, clothing, treachery, pillageput onוְלָבַ֖שׁ (wə·lā·ḇaš)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Conjunctive perfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 3847: Wrap around, to put on a, garment, clotheotherאֲחֵרִ֑ים (’ă·ḥê·rîm)Adjective - masculine pluralStrong's 312: Hinder, next, otherclothes,בְּגָדִ֣ים (bə·ḡā·ḏîm)Noun - masculine pluralStrong's 899: A covering, clothing, treachery, pillageand carryוְהוֹצִ֤יא (wə·hō·w·ṣî)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Hifil - Conjunctive perfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 3318: To go, bring, out, direct and proximthe ashesהַדֶּ֙שֶׁן֙ (had·de·šen)Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 1880: The fat, fatness, abundance, the, ashes of sacrificesoutsideמִח֣וּץ (mi·ḥūṣ)Preposition-m | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 2351: Separate by a, wall, outside, outdoorsthe campלַֽמַּחֲנֶ֔ה (lam·ma·ḥă·neh)Preposition-l, Article | Noun - common singularStrong's 4264: An encampment, an armytoאֶל־ (’el-)PrepositionStrong's 413: Near, with, among, toa ceremonially cleanטָהֽוֹר׃ (ṭā·hō·wr)Adjective - masculine singularStrong's 2889: Clean, pureplace.מָק֖וֹם (mā·qō·wm)Noun - masculine singularStrong's 4725: A standing, a spot, a conditionJump to PreviousAshes Camp Carry Ceremonially Clean Clothes Clothing Forth Garments Linen Others Outside Robes Stripped Tent-Circle
