Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(9) And he shall sprinkle.--Here again there is a striking difference between the ritual in the sacrifice before us and that in the case of the regular sin offering described in the previous chapters. The blood is simply to be thrown on the walls of the altar, whilst in the ordinary sin offering, the priest had not only to dip his finger seven times in the blood of the victim, but had to put it on the horns of the altar (Leviticus 4:6-7; Leviticus 4:17-18; Leviticus 4:25; Leviticus 4:30; Leviticus 4:34).Parallel Commentaries ...Hebrewthen he is to sprinkleוְהִזָּ֞ה (wə·hiz·zāh)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Hifil - Conjunctive perfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 5137: To spurt, spatter, sprinklesome of the bloodמִדַּ֤ם (mid·dam)Preposition-m | Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 1818: Blood, of man, an animal, the juice of the grape, bloodshedof the sin offeringהַחַטָּאת֙ (ha·ḥaṭ·ṭāṯ)Article | Noun - feminine singularStrong's 2403: An offence, its penalty, occasion, sacrifice, expiation, an offenderonעַל־ (‘al-)PrepositionStrong's 5921: Above, over, upon, againstthe sideקִ֣יר (qîr)Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 7023: A wallof the altar,הַמִּזְבֵּ֔חַ (ham·miz·bê·aḥ)Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 4196: An altarwhile the restוְהַנִּשְׁאָ֣ר (wə·han·niš·’ār)Conjunctive waw, Article | Verb - Nifal - Participle - masculine singularStrong's 7604: To swell up, be, redundantof the bloodבַּדָּ֔ם (bad·dām)Preposition-b, Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 1818: Blood, of man, an animal, the juice of the grape, bloodshedis drained outיִמָּצֵ֖ה (yim·mā·ṣêh)Verb - Nifal - Imperfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 4680: To suck out, to drain, to squeeze outatאֶל־ (’el-)PrepositionStrong's 413: Near, with, among, tothe baseיְס֣וֹד (yə·sō·wḏ)Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 3247: Foundation, baseof the altar.הַמִּזְבֵּ֑חַ (ham·miz·bê·aḥ)Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 4196: An altarIt [is]הֽוּא׃ (hū)Pronoun - third person masculine singularStrong's 1931: He, self, the same, this, that, as, area sin offering.חַטָּ֖את (ḥaṭ·ṭāṯ)Noun - feminine singularStrong's 2403: An offence, its penalty, occasion, sacrifice, expiation, an offenderJump to PreviousAltar Base Blood Bottom Drained Foundation Offering Rest Side Sin Sin-Offering Sprinkle Wall Wrung
