Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(13) As touching his sin that he had sinned in one of these.--That is, in one of the three sins specified in Leviticus 5:1-4 of this chapter. (See Leviticus 5:5.)And the remnant shall be the priest's.--Better, and it shall belong to the priest. The word remnant is not in the original, and is better left out, since with the exception of the handful which he took out to burn upon the altar, the whole tenth part of the ephah of fine flour belonged to the priest. At the time of Christ, this only took place when the offerer was a layman. But when a priest committed the offence and brought the offering in question, the whole tenth part of the ephah of flour was burnt on the altar, as was done in the case of the meat offering.Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewIn this way the priestהַכֹּהֵ֜ן (hak·kō·hên)Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 3548: Priestwill make atonementוְכִפֶּר֩ (wə·ḵip·per)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Piel - Conjunctive perfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 3722: To cover, to expiate, condone, to placate, cancelfor himעָלָ֨יו (‘ā·lāw)Preposition | third person masculine singularStrong's 5921: Above, over, upon, againstforעַל־ (‘al-)PrepositionStrong's 5921: Above, over, upon, againstanyמֵֽאַחַ֥ת (mê·’a·ḥaṯ)Preposition-m | Number - feminine singularStrong's 259: United, one, firstof theseמֵאֵ֖לֶּה (mê·’êl·leh)Preposition-m | Pronoun - common pluralStrong's 428: These, thosesinsחַטָּאת֧וֹ (ḥaṭ·ṭā·ṯōw)Noun - feminine singular construct | third person masculine singularStrong's 2403: An offence, its penalty, occasion, sacrifice, expiation, an offenderhe has committed,חָטָ֛א (ḥā·ṭā)Verb - Qal - Perfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 2398: To miss, to sin, to forfeit, lack, expiate, repent, lead astray, condemnand he will be forgiven.וְנִסְלַ֣ח (wə·nis·laḥ)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Nifal - Conjunctive perfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 5545: To forgive, pardonThe remainder will belong toוְהָיְתָ֥ה (wə·hā·yə·ṯāh)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Conjunctive perfect - third person feminine singularStrong's 1961: To fall out, come to pass, become, bethe priest,לַכֹּהֵ֖ן (lak·kō·hên)Preposition-l, Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 3548: Priestlike the grain offering.”כַּמִּנְחָֽה׃ (kam·min·ḥāh)Preposition-k, Article | Noun - feminine singularStrong's 4503: A donation, tribute, a sacrificial offeringJump to PreviousAtonement Belong Case Cereal Committed Forgiven Forgiveness Grain Meal Meal-Offering Meat Meat-Offering Oblation Offering Priest Priest's Remainder Remnant Rest Sin Sinned Touching Way
