Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(31) And if a man will at all redeem.--Better And if a man wishes to redeem. (See Leviticus 27:13; Leviticus 27:19) Though a man may not vow tithes, being already the Lord's, yet if he wishes he may redeem them by adding one-fifth to the actual value of them. According to the authorities during the second Temple, anyone was allowed to redeem the tithes due from another person by paying the exact value for them, without the addition of the fifth part. The tithes could then be eaten in any place, but the redemption money had to be taken to Jerusalem, where it was spent in sociable feasts, to which the Levite, the stranger, and the poor were invited.Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewIfוְאִם־ (wə·’im-)Conjunctive waw | ConjunctionStrong's 518: Lo!, whether?, if, although, Oh that!, when, nota manאִ֖ישׁ (’îš)Noun - masculine singularStrong's 376: A man as an individual, a male personwishesגָּאֹ֥ל (gā·’ōl)Verb - Qal - Infinitive absoluteStrong's 1350: To redeem, act as kinsmanto redeemיִגְאַ֛ל (yiḡ·’al)Verb - Qal - Imperfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 1350: To redeem, act as kinsmanpart of his tithe,מִמַּֽעַשְׂר֑וֹ (mim·ma·‘aś·rōw)Preposition-m | Noun - masculine singular construct | third person masculine singularStrong's 4643: Tenth part, tithehe must addיֹסֵ֥ף (yō·sêp̄)Verb - Hifil - Imperfect Jussive - third person masculine singularStrong's 3254: To add, augmenta fifthחֲמִשִׁית֖וֹ (ḥă·mi·šî·ṯōw)Number - ordinal feminine singular construct | third person masculine singularStrong's 2549: Fifth, a fifthto its value.עָלָֽיו׃ (‘ā·lāw)Preposition | third person masculine singularStrong's 5921: Above, over, upon, againstJump to PreviousAdd Addeth Aught Desire Fifth One-Fifth Ought Part Redeem Redeems Tenth Thereof Thereto Tithe Tithes Value Wishes
