Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(23) Then the priest shall reckon unto him.--In this case the vower is not to pay the low rate fixed for a field which is the family inheritance (see Leviticus 27:16), but the priest is to value it in proportion to the number of crops which it will produce up to the year of jubile, in the same way as fields are valued in ordinary purchases. (See Leviticus 25:14-16.)And he shall give thine estimation in that day.--This valuation the vower or his relatives had to pay all at once, without, however, the additional fifth part of its value; whilst in the case of vowing an hereditary field, the vower had the advantage of paying the small sum by yearly installments.Parallel Commentaries ...Hebrewthen the priestהַכֹּהֵ֗ן (hak·kō·hên)Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 3548: Priestshall calculateוְחִשַּׁב־ (wə·ḥiš·šaḇ-)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Piel - Conjunctive perfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 2803: To think, accountfor him the valueמִכְסַ֣ת (miḵ·saṯ)Noun - feminine singular constructStrong's 4373: An enumeration, a valuationup toעַ֖ד (‘aḏ)PrepositionStrong's 5704: As far as, even to, up to, until, whilethe Yearשְׁנַ֣ת (šə·naṯ)Noun - feminine singular constructStrong's 8141: A yearof Jubilee,הַיֹּבֵ֑ל (hay·yō·ḇêl)Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 3104: A ram, ram's horn (a wind instrument)and [the man] shall payוְנָתַ֤ן (wə·nā·ṯan)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Conjunctive perfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 5414: To give, put, setthe assessed valueהָעֶרְכְּךָ֙ (hā·‘er·kə·ḵā)Article | Noun - masculine singular construct | second person masculine singularStrong's 6187: A pile, equipment, estimateon thatהַה֔וּא (ha·hū)Article | Pronoun - third person masculine singularStrong's 1931: He, self, the same, this, that, as, aredayבַּיּ֣וֹם (bay·yō·wm)Preposition-b, Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 3117: A dayas a sacred offeringקֹ֖דֶשׁ (qō·ḏeš)Noun - masculine singularStrong's 6944: A sacred place, thing, sanctityto the LORD.לַיהוָֽה׃ (Yah·weh)Preposition-l | Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3068: LORD -- the proper name of the God of IsraelJump to PreviousAmount Calculate Compute Determine Estimation Fixed Holy Jubilee Pay Priest Reckon Something Valuation Value Worth
