Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(18) But if he sanctify his field after the jubile.--If, however, the vow is made after the jubile, the priest is to value the field according to the number of years from the time of the vow to the next jubile year. And it shall be abated from thy estimation.--That is, the years which have elapsed since the last jubile up to the time when he made the vow are to be deducted from the jubile cycle, and hence so many shekels are to be taken off from the original valuation of fifty shekels. Thus, for instance, if he vowed the field at the estimated value of fifty shekels twenty years after the jubile, the priest is only to reckon the thirty years which have to run to the next jubile, and is to deduct twenty shekels for the twenty years which have elapsed since the last jubile. Accordingly, the vower would only have to pay thirty shekels, exclusive of the fifth part above the estimated value.Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewBut ifוְאִם־ (wə·’im-)Conjunctive waw | ConjunctionStrong's 518: Lo!, whether?, if, although, Oh that!, when, nothe consecratesיַקְדִּ֣ישׁ (yaq·dîš)Verb - Hifil - Imperfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 6942: To be set apart or consecratedhis fieldשָׂדֵהוּ֒ (śā·ḏê·hū)Noun - masculine singular construct | third person masculine singularStrong's 7704: Field, landafterאַחַ֣ר (’a·ḥar)AdverbStrong's 310: The hind or following partthe Jubilee,הַיֹּבֵל֮ (hay·yō·ḇêl)Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 3104: A ram, ram's horn (a wind instrument)the priestהַכֹּהֵ֜ן (hak·kō·hên)Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 3548: Priestis to calculateוְחִשַּׁב־ (wə·ḥiš·šaḇ-)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Piel - Conjunctive perfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 2803: To think, accountthe priceהַכֶּ֗סֶף (hak·ke·sep̄)Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 3701: Silver, moneyin proportion toעַל־ (‘al-)PrepositionStrong's 5921: Above, over, upon, againstthe yearsהַשָּׁנִים֙ (haš·šā·nîm)Article | Noun - feminine pluralStrong's 8141: A yearleftהַנּ֣וֹתָרֹ֔ת (han·nō·w·ṯā·rōṯ)Article | Verb - Nifal - Participle - feminine pluralStrong's 3498: To jut over, exceed, to excel, to remain, be left, to leave, cause to abound, preserveuntilעַ֖ד (‘aḏ)PrepositionStrong's 5704: As far as, even to, up to, until, whilethe next Yearשְׁנַ֣ת (šə·naṯ)Noun - feminine singular constructStrong's 8141: A yearof Jubilee,הַיֹּבֵ֑ל (hay·yō·ḇêl)Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 3104: A ram, ram's horn (a wind instrument)so that your valuationמֵֽעֶרְכֶּֽךָ׃ (mê·‘er·ke·ḵā)Preposition-m | Noun - masculine singular construct | second person masculine singularStrong's 6187: A pile, equipment, estimatewill be reduced.וְנִגְרַ֖ע (wə·niḡ·ra‘)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Nifal - Conjunctive perfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 1639: To scrape off, to shave, remove, lessen, withholdJump to PreviousAbated Amount Calculate Compute Consecrates Dedicates Determine Estimation Field Gives Hallow However Jubilee Left Money Necessary Price Priest Reckon Reckoned Relation Sanctify Valuation Value Worked
