Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(48) He may be redeemed again.--The law which applies to a heathen who sold himself to a Hebrew is reversed in this case. Whilst the heathen cannot be redeemed, and is to remain a bondman for ever, the Israelite who sells himself to a heathen may be redeemed. Indeed, according to the interpretation which obtained during the second Temple, this passage enjoins it upon his relations and the congregation to redeem him as soon as possible. Hence the ancient Chaldee Version translates it, "his redemption must be effected forthwith."Parallel Commentaries ...Hebrewhe retainsתִּהְיֶה־ (tih·yeh-)Verb - Qal - Imperfect - third person feminine singularStrong's 1961: To fall out, come to pass, become, bethe right of redemptionגְּאֻלָּ֖ה (gə·’ul·lāh)Noun - feminine singularStrong's 1353: Redemption, relationshipafterאַחֲרֵ֣י (’a·ḥă·rê)PrepositionStrong's 310: The hind or following parthe has sold himself.נִמְכַּ֔ר (nim·kar)Verb - Nifal - Perfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 4376: To sellOneאֶחָ֥ד (’e·ḥāḏ)Number - masculine singularStrong's 259: United, one, firstof his brothersמֵאֶחָ֖יו (mê·’e·ḥāw)Preposition-m | Noun - masculine plural construct | third person masculine singularStrong's 251: A brother, )may redeem him:יִגְאָלֶֽנּוּ׃ (yiḡ·’ā·len·nū)Verb - Qal - Imperfect - third person masculine singular | third person masculine singularStrong's 1350: To redeem, act as kinsmanJump to PreviousFree Price Redeem Redeemed Redemption Relatives Retains Right Sold
