Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(20) And the priest shall wave them . . . with the two lambs.--During the second Temple this was done in the following manner :--The two lambs were brought into the Temple, and waved together or separately by the priest while yet alive. Whereupon they were slain, and the priest took the breast and shoulder of each one (see Leviticus 7:30-32), laid them down by the side of the two loaves, put both his hands under them, and waved them all together or separately towards the east side forwards and backwards, up and down. He then burned the fat of the two lambs, after which the remainder of the flesh, which became the perquisite of the officiating priest, was eaten by him and his fellow-priests. Of the two loaves the high priest took one, and the other was divided between the officiating priests, who had to eat them up within the same day and half the following night, just as the flesh of the most holy things. After these prescribed sacrifices had been offered, each individual brought his free-will offering, which formed the cheerful and hospitable meal of the family, and to which the Levite, the widow, the orphan, the poor, and the stranger, were invited.Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewThe priestהַכֹּהֵ֣ן ׀ (hak·kō·hên)Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 3548: Priestis to waveוְהֵנִ֣יף (wə·hê·nîp̄)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Hifil - Conjunctive perfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 5130: To move to and fro, wave, sprinkle[the lambs]אֹתָ֡ם (’ō·ṯām)Direct object marker | third person masculine pluralStrong's 853: Untranslatable mark of the accusative caseas a wave offeringתְּנוּפָה֙ (tə·nū·p̄āh)Noun - feminine singularStrong's 8573: A brandishing, tumult, the official undulation of sacrificial offeringsbeforeלִפְנֵ֣י (lip̄·nê)Preposition-l | Noun - common plural constructStrong's 6440: The facethe LORD,יְהוָ֔ה (Yah·weh)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3068: LORD -- the proper name of the God of Israeltogether withעַל֩ (‘al)PrepositionStrong's 5921: Above, over, upon, againstthe breadלֶ֨חֶם (le·ḥem)Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 3899: Food, bread, grainof the firstfruits.הַבִּכּוּרִ֤ים (hab·bik·kū·rîm)Article | Noun - masculine pluralStrong's 1061: The first-fruits of the cropThe bread and the twoשְׁנֵ֖י (šə·nê)Number - mdcStrong's 8147: Two (a cardinal number)lambsכְּבָשִׂ֑ים (kə·ḇā·śîm)Noun - masculine pluralStrong's 3532: A lambare to beיִהְי֥וּ (yih·yū)Verb - Qal - Imperfect - third person masculine pluralStrong's 1961: To fall out, come to pass, become, besacredקֹ֛דֶשׁ (qō·ḏeš)Noun - masculine singularStrong's 6944: A sacred place, thing, sanctityto the LORDלַיהוָ֖ה (Yah·weh)Preposition-l | Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3068: LORD -- the proper name of the God of Israelfor the priest.לַכֹּהֵֽן׃ (lak·kō·hên)Preposition-l, Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 3548: PriestJump to PreviousBread First Firstfruits First-Fruits Fruits He-Lambs Holy Lambs Offering Sacred Together Wave Waved Wave-Offering
