Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(24) That which is bruised, or crushed, or broken, or cut.--These four terms express the four ways which the ancients used to emasculate animals.Neither shall ye make any offering thereof in your land.--Better, and this shall ye not do in your land; that is, not only are animals thus mutilated prohibited as offerings for the altar, but this practice of gelding is altogether forbidden to the Israelites with regard to any animal whatsoever throughout the country. This law is binding upon the orthodox Jews to this day, and the question has recently been discussed by some of their spiritual guides, since it seriously affects those of their community who are engaged in farming land.Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewYou are notלֹ֥א (lō)Adverb - Negative particleStrong's 3808: Not, noto presentתַקְרִ֖יבוּ (ṯaq·rî·ḇū)Verb - Hifil - Imperfect - second person masculine pluralStrong's 7126: To come near, approachto the LORDלַֽיהוָ֑ה (Yah·weh)Preposition-l | Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3068: LORD -- the proper name of the God of Israel[an animal whose testicles are] bruised,וּמָע֤וּךְ (ū·mā·‘ūḵ)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - QalPassParticiple - masculine singularStrong's 4600: To press, to pierce, emasculate, handlecrushed,וְכָתוּת֙ (wə·ḵā·ṯūṯ)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - QalPassParticiple - masculine singularStrong's 3807: To bruise, violently striketorn,וְנָת֣וּק (wə·nā·ṯūq)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - QalPassParticiple - masculine singularStrong's 5423: To pull, draw, or tear away, apart, or offor cut;וְכָר֔וּת (wə·ḵā·rūṯ)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - QalPassParticiple - masculine singularStrong's 3772: To cut, to destroy, consume, to covenantyou are not toלֹ֥א (lō)Adverb - Negative particleStrong's 3808: Not, nosacrifice themתַעֲשֽׂוּ׃ (ṯa·‘ă·śū)Verb - Qal - Imperfect - second person masculine pluralStrong's 6213: To do, makein your land.וּֽבְאַרְצְכֶ֖ם (ū·ḇə·’ar·ṣə·ḵem)Conjunctive waw, Preposition-b | Noun - feminine singular construct | second person masculine pluralStrong's 776: Earth, landJump to PreviousAnimal Anywhere Beaten Broken Bruised Crushed Cut Damaged Enlarged Offer Offered Offering Parts Present Sacrifice Sex Stones Testicles Thereof Torn Within
