Ellicott's Commentary
Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(8) If he . . . spit upon him.--Spitting in the face of a person was, and still is, commonly resorted to among Oriental nations as an expression of insult and contempt (Numbers 12:14; Deuteronomy 25:9; Isaiah 1:6; Job 30:10; Matthew 26:67, &c.). Suffering from the disease here discussed, the patient would naturally be more irritable, and hence be liable to give vent more frequently to this mode of expressing his wrath. Now, any person upon whom he happened to heap this indignity became defiled by the spittle in the same manner, and had to go through the same purification, as he who chanced to touch his garments, or as the physician who had to examine him.Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewIfוְכִֽי־ (wə·ḵî-)Conjunctive waw | ConjunctionStrong's 3588: A relative conjunctionthe man with the dischargeהַזָּ֖ב (haz·zāḇ)Article | Verb - Qal - Participle - masculine singularStrong's 2100: To flow freely, to have a, flux, to waste away, to overflowspitsיָרֹ֛ק (yā·rōq)Verb - Qal - Imperfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 7556: To spiton one who is clean,בַּטָּה֑וֹר (baṭ·ṭā·hō·wr)Preposition-b, Article | Adjective - masculine singularStrong's 2889: Clean, pure[that person] must washוְכִבֶּ֧ס (wə·ḵib·bes)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Piel - Conjunctive perfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 3526: To trample, to washhis clothesבְּגָדָ֛יו (bə·ḡā·ḏāw)Noun - masculine plural construct | third person masculine singularStrong's 899: A covering, clothing, treachery, pillageand batheוְרָחַ֥ץ (wə·rā·ḥaṣ)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Conjunctive perfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 7364: To wash, wash off or away, bathewith water,בַּמַּ֖יִם (bam·ma·yim)Preposition-b, Article | Noun - masculine pluralStrong's 4325: Water, juice, urine, semenand he will be uncleanוְטָמֵ֥א (wə·ṭā·mê)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Conjunctive perfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 2930: To be or become uncleanuntilעַד־ (‘aḏ-)PrepositionStrong's 5704: As far as, even to, up to, until, whileevening.הָעָֽרֶב׃ (hā·‘ā·reḇ)Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 6153: EveningJump to PreviousBathe Bathed Body Clean Clothes Clothing Discharge Evening Issue Liquid Mouth Someone Spit Unclean Wash Washed Water
