Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(11) And hath not rinsed his hands in water.--If the patient happens to touch any one with his hands without having first washed his hands, the man who has thus been touched by the unwashen hands of the defiled invalid contracts pollution till sundown of the day on which he has been touched. He has to wash his clothes and immerse his whole body in water before he can partake of the privileges of the sanctuary. This is the only instance where the touch of the hand as imparting defilement is expressly mentioned, and where the washing of the hands alone is ordered in the Mosaic-Law to prevent the communication of pollution. The washing of the hands over the heifer, ordered in Deuteronomy 21:6, is of a different kind. It is meant to renounce any share in the guilt of the murder, or rather, to protest their innocence.Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewIf the man with the dischargeהַזָּ֔ב (haz·zāḇ)Article | Verb - Qal - Participle - masculine singularStrong's 2100: To flow freely, to have a, flux, to waste away, to overflowtouchesיִגַּע־ (yig·ga‘-)Verb - Qal - Imperfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 5060: To touch, lay the hand upon, to reach, violently, to strikeanyoneוְכֹ֨ל (wə·ḵōl)Conjunctive waw | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 3605: The whole, all, any, everywithoutלֹא־ (lō-)Adverb - Negative particleStrong's 3808: Not, nofirst rinsingשָׁטַ֣ף (šā·ṭap̄)Verb - Qal - Perfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 7857: To gush, to inundate, cleanse, to gallop, conquerhis handsוְיָדָ֖יו (wə·yā·ḏāw)Conjunctive waw | Noun - fdc | third person masculine singularStrong's 3027: A handwith water,בַּמָּ֑יִם (bam·mā·yim)Preposition-b, Article | Noun - masculine pluralStrong's 4325: Water, juice, urine, sementhe one who was touched must washוְכִבֶּ֧ס (wə·ḵib·bes)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Piel - Conjunctive perfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 3526: To trample, to washhis clothesבְּגָדָ֛יו (bə·ḡā·ḏāw)Noun - masculine plural construct | third person masculine singularStrong's 899: A covering, clothing, treachery, pillageand batheוְרָחַ֥ץ (wə·rā·ḥaṣ)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Conjunctive perfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 7364: To wash, wash off or away, bathewith water,בַּמַּ֖יִם (bam·ma·yim)Preposition-b, Article | Noun - masculine pluralStrong's 4325: Water, juice, urine, semenand he will be uncleanוְטָמֵ֥א (wə·ṭā·mê)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Conjunctive perfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 2930: To be or become uncleanuntilעַד־ (‘aḏ-)PrepositionStrong's 5704: As far as, even to, up to, until, whileevening.הָעָֽרֶב׃ (hā·‘ā·reḇ)Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 6153: EveningJump to PreviousBathe Body Clothes Clothing Discharge Evening Hands Issue Likewise Puts Rinsed Rinsing Touches Toucheth Unclean Wash Washed Washing Water Whomever Whomsoever
