Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(37) With hollow strakes, greenish or reddish.--If the house is really leprous, the priest on inspecting it will find in the walls the same three symptoms which are visible in the skin of leprous human beings: (1) hollow strakes, or, rather, deep cavities or depressions, which the ancient canons define as a depression deeper than the rest of the wall, being the same symptom as in man (see Leviticus 13:3); (2) a greenish or (3) a reddish spot, which were the second and third symptoms of leprosy in men and garments. (Comp. Leviticus 13:49.) According to the canons which obtained during the second Temple, the size of this discoloured spot on the wall had to be that of two beans.Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewHe is to examineוְרָאָ֣ה (wə·rā·’āh)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Conjunctive perfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 7200: To see[the house],הַנֶּ֗גַע (han·ne·ḡa‘)Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 5061: Mark -- a blow, a spotand ifוְהִנֵּ֤ה (wə·hin·nêh)Conjunctive waw | InterjectionStrong's 2009: Lo! behold!the mildewהַנֶּ֙גַע֙ (han·ne·ḡa‘)Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 5061: Mark -- a blow, a spoton the wallsבְּקִירֹ֣ת (bə·qî·rōṯ)Preposition-b | Noun - masculine plural constructStrong's 7023: A wallconsists of greenיְרַקְרַקֹּ֔ת (yə·raq·raq·qōṯ)Adjective - feminine pluralStrong's 3422: Greenish, pale greenorא֖וֹ (’ōw)ConjunctionStrong's 176: Desire, ifredאֲדַמְדַּמֹּ֑ת (’ă·ḏam·dam·mōṯ)Adjective - feminine pluralStrong's 125: Reddishdepressionsשְׁקַֽעֲרוּרֹת֙ (šə·qa·‘ă·rū·rōṯ)Noun - feminine pluralStrong's 8258: Depression, hollowthat appearוּמַרְאֵיהֶ֥ן (ū·mar·’ê·hen)Conjunctive waw | Noun - masculine plural construct | third person feminine pluralStrong's 4758: Sight, appearance, visionto be beneathשָׁפָ֖ל (šā·p̄āl)Adjective - masculine singularStrong's 8217: Depressedthe surface of the wall,הַקִּֽיר׃ (haq·qîr)Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 7023: A wallJump to PreviousAppear Appearance Appears Deeper Disease Examine Face Green Greenish Hollow Hollows House Lower Mark Marked Mildew Plague Red Reddish Seems Sight Spots Streaks Surface Thereof Wall Walls
