Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(36) That they empty the house.--If the examination was made before the removal of the objects in it, and the priest pronounced the house leprous, all the furniture, &c, found therein would be defiled. Hence the benign law that everything should be removed previous to the priest's inspection, to save the household stuff. This assuredly shows that the law did not regard leprosy as infectious.Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewThe priestהַכֹּהֵ֜ן (hak·kō·hên)Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 3548: Priestmust order thatוְצִוָּ֨ה (wə·ṣiw·wāh)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Piel - Conjunctive perfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 6680: To lay charge (upon), give charge (to), command, orderthe houseהַבַּ֗יִת (hab·ba·yiṯ)Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 1004: A housebe clearedוּפִנּ֣וּ (ū·p̄in·nū)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Piel - Conjunctive perfect - third person common pluralStrong's 6437: To turn, to face, appear, lookbeforeבְּטֶ֨רֶם (bə·ṭe·rem)Preposition-b | AdverbStrong's 2962: Non-occurrence, not yet, beforeheהַכֹּהֵן֙ (hak·kō·hên)Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 3548: Priestenters itיָבֹ֤א (yā·ḇō)Verb - Qal - Imperfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 935: To come in, come, go in, goto examineלִרְא֣וֹת (lir·’ō·wṯ)Preposition-l | Verb - Qal - Infinitive constructStrong's 7200: To seethe mildew,הַנֶּ֔גַע (han·ne·ḡa‘)Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 5061: Mark -- a blow, a spotlestוְלֹ֥א (wə·lō)Conjunctive waw | Adverb - Negative particleStrong's 3808: Not, noeverythingכָּל־ (kāl-)Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 3605: The whole, all, any, everyin the houseבַּבָּ֑יִת (bab·bā·yiṯ)Preposition-b, Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 1004: A housebecomes unclean.יִטְמָ֖א (yiṭ·mā)Verb - Qal - Imperfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 2930: To be or become uncleanAfterוְאַ֥חַר (wə·’a·ḥar)Conjunctive waw | AdverbStrong's 310: The hind or following partthis,כֵּ֛ן (kên)AdverbStrong's 3651: So -- thusthe priestהַכֹּהֵ֖ן (hak·kō·hên)Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 3548: Priestshall go inיָבֹ֥א (yā·ḇō)Verb - Qal - Imperfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 935: To come in, come, go in, goto inspectלִרְא֥וֹת (lir·’ō·wṯ)Preposition-l | Verb - Qal - Infinitive constructStrong's 7200: To seethe house.הַבָּֽיִת׃ (hab·bā·yiṯ)Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 1004: A houseJump to PreviousAfterward Afterwards Command Declared Disease Emptied Empty Enter Examine Goes House Inspect Mark Mildew Need Order Orders Plague Pronounced Unclean
