Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(7, 8) But if the scab spread.--As Leviticus 13:5 prescribes that the priest who examines the patient after seven days' quarantine, and finds no spreading of the affected spot, is to give another seven days' quarantine, the verses before us declare what the examining priest is to do when he notices that the spot has spread. For his cleansing.--That is, for the purpose of being declared clean. If, after he had appeared before the priest to be examined and declared not leprous, at the expiration of the first week of seclusion the priest finds that the spot has spread, he must pronounce him unclean, since the spreading indicates that it is leprosy.Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewBut ifוְאִם־ (wə·’im-)Conjunctive waw | ConjunctionStrong's 518: Lo!, whether?, if, although, Oh that!, when, notthe rashהַמִּסְפַּ֙חַת֙ (ham·mis·pa·ḥaṯ)Article | Noun - feminine singularStrong's 4556: Scrufspreadsפָּשֹׂ֨ה (pā·śōh)Verb - Qal - Infinitive absoluteStrong's 6581: To spreadfurther on his skinבָּע֔וֹר (bā·‘ō·wr)Preposition-b, Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 5785: Skin, hide, leatherafterאַחֲרֵ֧י (’a·ḥă·rê)PrepositionStrong's 310: The hind or following parthe has shownהֵרָאֹת֛וֹ (hê·rā·’ō·ṯōw)Verb - Nifal - Infinitive construct | third person masculine singularStrong's 7200: To seehimself toאֶל־ (’el-)PrepositionStrong's 413: Near, with, among, tothe priestהַכֹּהֵ֖ן (hak·kō·hên)Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 3548: Priestfor his cleansing,לְטָהֳרָת֑וֹ (lə·ṭā·ho·rā·ṯōw)Preposition-l | Noun - feminine singular construct | third person masculine singularStrong's 2893: Ceremonial purification, moral purityhe must presentוְנִרְאָ֥ה (wə·nir·’āh)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Nifal - Conjunctive perfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 7200: To seehimself againשֵׁנִ֖ית (šê·nîṯ)Number - ordinal feminine singularStrong's 8145: Second (an ordinal number)toאֶל־ (’el-)PrepositionStrong's 413: Near, with, among, tothe priest.הַכֹּהֵֽן׃ (hak·kō·hên)Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 3548: PriestJump to PreviousAbroad Appear Clean Cleansing Eruption Farther Greatly Increased Mark Priest Pronounced Rash Scab Second Show Shown Size Skin Spread Spreads Time
