Ellicott's Commentary
Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(9) For the people were numbered.--It is doubtful whether this implies another numbering besides that at Mizpeh (Judges 20:1-17). In the tale which had then been made up, the absence of inhabitants of a single town might for the present escape notice. It would be sufficient now merely to refer to the lists then made (Judges 20:1-17).Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewFor when the peopleהָעָ֑ם (hā·‘ām)Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 5971: A people, a tribe, troops, attendants, a flockwere counted,וַיִּתְפָּקֵ֖ד (way·yiṯ·pā·qêḏ)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Hitpael - Consecutive imperfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 6485: To visit, to oversee, muster, charge, care for, miss, depositnoneאֵֽין־ (’ên-)AdverbStrong's 369: A non-entity, a negative particleof the residentsמִיּוֹשְׁבֵ֖י (mî·yō·wō·šə·ḇê)Preposition-m | Verb - Qal - Participle - masculine plural constructStrong's 3427: To sit down, to dwell, to remain, to settle, to marryof Jabesh-gileadיָבֵ֥שׁ (yā·ḇêš)Noun - proper - feminine singularStrong's 3003: Jabesh -- a place in Gilead, also an Israelitewere there.שָׁם֙ (šām)AdverbStrong's 8033: There, then, thitherJump to PreviousCounted Inhabitants Jabesh Jabeshgilead Jabesh-Gilead Ja'besh-Gil'ead Mustered Numbered Present Themselves
