Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(28) Phinehas.--The fact that the high priest is. still the grandson of Aaron, who had shown such noble zeal in the desert (Numbers 25:8; Psalm 106:30), is. an important note of time, and proves decisively that this narrative, like the last, is anterior to much that has been recorded in the earlier chapters. It is remarkable that the chief personages in these two wild scenes are the grandson of Moses and the grandson of Aaron, and it is a strange illustration of the disorder of the times that while the latter fulfils the supreme functions of the high priest, the former, who has sunk to the condition of a poor wandering Levite, does not go to his powerful cousin, but serves an unknown and schismatic image for a most paltry pittance.Tomorrow.--Comp. Judges 4:14; Joshua 8:1. This is the first promise of success. The people needed to be taught that even in a religious war they could by no means rely on their own strength. How often has history laughed to scorn the cynical remark of Napoleon that "Providence usually favours the strongest battalion !"Parallel Commentaries ...Hebrewand Phinehasוּ֠פִינְחָס (ū·p̄î·nə·ḥās)Conjunctive waw | Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 6372: Phinehas -- three Israelitessonבֶּן־ (ben-)Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 1121: A sonof Eleazar,אֶלְעָזָ֨ר (’el·‘ā·zār)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 499: Eleazar -- 'God has helped', six Israelitesthe sonבֶּֽן־ (ben-)Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 1121: A sonof Aaron,אַהֲרֹ֜ן (’a·hă·rōn)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 175: Aaron -- an elder brother of Mosesservedעֹמֵ֣ד ׀ (‘ō·mêḏ)Verb - Qal - Participle - masculine singularStrong's 5975: To stand, in various relationsbefore it.)לְפָנָ֗יו (lə·p̄ā·nāw)Preposition-l | Noun - common plural construct | third person masculine singularStrong's 6440: The faceThe Israelites asked,לֵאמֹר֒ (lê·mōr)Preposition-l | Verb - Qal - Infinitive constructStrong's 559: To utter, say“Should we againהַאוֹסִ֨ף (ha·’ō·w·sip̄)Verb - Hifil - Imperfect - first person common singularStrong's 3254: To add, augmentgo outלָצֵ֧את (lā·ṣêṯ)Preposition-l | Verb - Qal - Infinitive constructStrong's 3318: To go, bring, out, direct and proximto battleלַמִּלְחָמָ֛ה (lam·mil·ḥā·māh)Preposition-l, Article | Noun - feminine singularStrong's 4421: A battle, waragainstעִם־ (‘im-)PrepositionStrong's 5973: With, equally withour brothersאָחִ֖י (’ā·ḥî)Noun - masculine singular construct | first person common singularStrong's 251: A brother, )the Benjamites,בְּנֵֽי־ (bə·nê-)Noun - masculine plural constructStrong's 1121: A sonorאִם־ (’im-)ConjunctionStrong's 518: Lo!, whether?, if, although, Oh that!, when, notshould we stop?”אֶחְדָּ֑ל (’eḥ·dāl)Verb - Qal - Imperfect - first person common singularStrong's 2308: To be flabby, desist, be lacking, idleThe LORDיְהוָה֙ (Yah·weh)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3068: LORD -- the proper name of the God of Israelanswered,וַיֹּ֤אמֶר (way·yō·mer)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Consecutive imperfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 559: To utter, say“Fight,עֲל֔וּ (‘ă·lū)Verb - Qal - Imperative - masculine pluralStrong's 5927: To ascend, in, activelyforכִּ֥י (kî)ConjunctionStrong's 3588: A relative conjunctiontomorrowמָחָ֖ר (mā·ḥār)AdverbStrong's 4279: Deferred, the morrow, tomorrow, hereafterI will deliver themאֶתְּנֶ֥נּוּ (’et·tə·nen·nū)Verb - Qal - Imperfect - first person common singular | third person masculine singularStrong's 5414: To give, put, setinto your hands.”בְיָדֶֽךָ׃ (ḇə·yā·ḏe·ḵā)Preposition-b | Noun - feminine singular construct | second person masculine singularStrong's 3027: A handJump to PreviousAaron Battle Benjamin Cease Children Deliver Eleazar Hand Morrow Phinehas Stood Tomorrow To-Morrow
