Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(11) Knit together as one man.--The Hebrew word for "knit together" (marg., fellows) is chabeerim. It means that they were all as united as if they belonged to one cheber, or club. It is the spirit of clubbism (Greek, Tcupcfa), displayed in this instance in a good cause.Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewSo allכָּל־ (kāl-)Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 3605: The whole, all, any, everythe menאִ֤ישׁ (’îš)Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 376: A man as an individual, a male personof Israelיִשְׂרָאֵל֙ (yiś·rā·’êl)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3478: Israel -- 'God strives', another name of Jacob and his descgatheredוַיֵּֽאָסֵ֞ף (way·yê·’ā·sêp̄)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Nifal - Consecutive imperfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 622: To gather for, any purpose, to receive, take away, removeas oneאֶחָ֖ד (’e·ḥāḏ)Number - masculine singularStrong's 259: United, one, firstman,כְּאִ֥ישׁ (kə·’îš)Preposition-k | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 376: A man as an individual, a male personunitedחֲבֵרִֽים׃ (ḥă·ḇê·rîm)Noun - masculine pluralStrong's 2270: United, associate, companionagainstאֶל־ (’el-)PrepositionStrong's 413: Near, with, among, tothe city.הָעִ֔יר (hā·‘îr)Article | Noun - feminine singularStrong's 5892: ExcitementJump to PreviousBanded City Companions Israel Knit Together United
