Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(25) An eunuch, which had the charge of the men of war.--Omit the article before "charge." The Hebrew term (Pakid) conveys the meaning of "deputy," a superintendent under a chief commander. The officer in question had probably, together with the persons named in Jeremiah 52:24, been more conspicuous than his fellows in resisting the Chaldaeans.Seven men.--2Kings 25:19 gives "five" as the number. Here also we have to think of the exile as the punishment of prominence in the defence of the city. The chief scribe of the army, the "secretary of war," would naturally occupy such a position. The description of the men as those "that were near the king's person" (literally, saw the king's face) implies a high official rank.Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewOf thoseוּמִן־ (ū·min-)Conjunctive waw | PrepositionStrong's 4480: A part of, from, out ofstill in the city,הָעִ֡יר (hā·‘îr)Article | Noun - feminine singularStrong's 5892: Excitementhe tookלָקַח֩ (lā·qaḥ)Verb - Qal - Perfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 3947: To takeaאֶחָ֜ד (’e·ḥāḏ)Number - masculine singularStrong's 259: United, one, firstcourt officialסָרִ֨יס (sā·rîs)Noun - masculine singularStrong's 5631: A eunuch, valet, a minister of statewhoאֲ‍ֽשֶׁר־ (’ăšer-)Pronoun - relativeStrong's 834: Who, which, what, that, when, where, how, because, in order thathad beenהָיָ֥ה (hā·yāh)Verb - Qal - Perfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 1961: To fall out, come to pass, become, beappointedפָקִ֣יד ׀ (p̄ā·qîḏ)Noun - masculine singularStrong's 6496: Commissioner, deputy, overseeroverעַל־ (‘al-)PrepositionStrong's 5921: Above, over, upon, againstthe menאַנְשֵׁ֣י (’an·šê)Noun - masculine plural constructStrong's 582: Man, mankindof war,אִישׁ֙ (’îš)Noun - masculine singularStrong's 376: A man as an individual, a male personsevenוְשִׁבְעָ֨ה (wə·šiḇ·‘āh)Conjunctive waw | Number - masculine singularStrong's 7651: Seven, seven times, a week, an indefinite numbertrusted royalהַמֶּ֙לֶךְ֙ (ham·me·leḵ)Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 4428: A kingadvisers,מֵרֹאֵ֤י (mê·rō·’ê)Preposition-m | Verb - Qal - Participle - masculine plural constructStrong's 7200: To seeas well asוְאֵ֗ת (wə·’êṯ)Conjunctive waw | Direct object markerStrong's 853: Untranslatable mark of the accusative casethe scribeסֹפֵר֙ (sō·p̄êr)Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 5608: To count, recount, relateof the captainשַׂ֣ר (śar)Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 8269: Chieftain, chief, ruler, official, captain, princeof the army,הַצָּבָ֔א (haṣ·ṣā·ḇā)Article | Noun - common singularStrong's 6635: A mass of persons, reg, organized for, war, a campaignwho enlistedהַמַּצְבִּ֖א (ham·maṣ·bi)Article | Verb - Hifil - Participle - masculine singularStrong's 6633: To wage war, servethe peopleעַ֣ם (‘am)Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 5971: A people, a tribe, troops, attendants, a flockof the land,הָאָ֑רֶץ (hā·’ā·reṣ)Article | Noun - feminine singularStrong's 776: Earth, landand sixtyוְשִׁשִּׁ֥ים (wə·šiš·šîm)Conjunctive waw | Number - common pluralStrong's 8346: Sixtymenמֵעַ֣ם (mê·‘am)Preposition-m | Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 5971: A people, a tribe, troops, attendants, a flockwho were foundהַֽנִּמְצְאִ֖ים (han·nim·ṣə·’îm)Article | Verb - Nifal - Participle - masculine pluralStrong's 4672: To come forth to, appear, exist, to attain, find, acquire, to occur, meet, be presentinבְּת֥וֹךְ (bə·ṯō·wḵ)Preposition-b | Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 8432: A bisection, the centrethe city.הָעִֽיר׃ (hā·‘îr)Article | Noun - feminine singularStrong's 5892: ExcitementJump to PreviousAdvisers Army Captain Charge City Eunuch Face Found Host King's Midst Mustered Officer Official Overseer Principal Scribe Seven Sixty Threescore War
