Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(11, 12) When all the Jews that were in Moab . . .--It lay in the nature of things that many of the dwellers in Judaea fled before the march of the Chaldaean armies, and took refuge in the neighbouring regions. In Ruth 1:2, 1Samuel 22:3, Isaiah 16:4, we find analogous instances of fugitives from Judah finding shelter in the Moabite country. These, on hearing of the generous policy adopted by Gedaliah, took courage and returned in time to profit by his permission to gather the produce which otherwise would have been left to perish on the soil.Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewWhen allכָּֽל־ (kāl-)Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 3605: The whole, all, any, everythe Jewsהַיְּהוּדִ֡ים (hay·yə·hū·ḏîm)Article | Noun - proper - masculine pluralStrong's 3064: Jews -- Jewishin Moab,בְּמוֹאָ֣ב ׀ (bə·mō·w·’āḇ)Preposition-b | Noun - proper - feminine singularStrong's 4124: Moab -- a son of Lot,also his descendants and the territory where they settledAmmon,וּבִבְנֵֽי־ (ū·ḇiḇ·nê-)Conjunctive waw, Preposition-b | Noun - masculine plural constructStrong's 1121: A sonEdom,וּבֶאֱד֜וֹם (ū·ḇe·’ĕ·ḏō·wm)Conjunctive waw, Preposition-b | Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 123: The name of a condimentand allבְּכָל־ (bə·ḵāl)Preposition-b | Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 3605: The whole, all, any, everythe other landsהָֽאֲרָצוֹת֙ (hā·’ă·rā·ṣō·wṯ)Article | Noun - feminine pluralStrong's 776: Earth, landheardשָֽׁמְע֔וּ (šā·mə·‘ū)Verb - Qal - Perfect - third person common pluralStrong's 8085: To hear intelligentlythatכִּֽי־ (kî-)ConjunctionStrong's 3588: A relative conjunctionthe kingמֶֽלֶךְ־ (me·leḵ-)Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 4428: A kingof Babylonבָּבֶ֛ל (bā·ḇel)Noun - proper - feminine singularStrong's 894: Babylon -- an eastern Mediterranean empire and its capital cityhad leftנָתַ֧ן (nā·ṯan)Verb - Qal - Perfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 5414: To give, put, seta remnantשְׁאֵרִ֖ית (šə·’ê·rîṯ)Noun - feminine singularStrong's 7611: Rest, residue, remnant, remainderin Judahלִֽיהוּדָ֑ה (lî·hū·ḏāh)Preposition-l | Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3063: Judah -- 'praised', a son of Jacob, also the southern kingdom, also four Israelitesand had appointedהִפְקִ֣יד (hip̄·qîḏ)Verb - Hifil - Perfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 6485: To visit, to oversee, muster, charge, care for, miss, depositGedaliahגְּדַלְיָ֖הוּ (gə·ḏal·yā·hū)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 1436: Gedaliah -- 'Yah is great', three Israelitessonבֶּן־ (ben-)Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 1121: A sonof Ahikam,אֲחִיקָ֥ם (’ă·ḥî·qām)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 296: Ahikam -- 'my brother has arisen', an Israelitethe sonבֶּן־ (ben-)Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 1121: A sonof Shaphan,שָׁפָֽן׃ (šā·p̄ān)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 8227: A species of rockrabbit, the hyraxover them,עֲלֵיהֶ֔ם (‘ă·lê·hem)Preposition | third person masculine pluralStrong's 5921: Above, over, upon, againstJump to PreviousAhikam Ammon Ammonites Babylon Children Countries Edom Gedaliah Heard Jews Judah Likewise Moab Remnant Shaphan
