Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(25) There was no man.--To chaos and darkness and the earthquake was added the horrible sense of solitude. Not man only, but the creatures that seemed least open to man's attack, were fled. (Comp. Jeremiah 2:6.) The same thought re-appears in Jeremiah 9:10.Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewI looked,רָאִ֕יתִי (rā·’î·ṯî)Verb - Qal - Perfect - first person common singularStrong's 7200: To seeand noאֵ֣ין (’ên)AdverbStrong's 369: A non-entity, a negative particleman was left;הָאָדָ֑ם (hā·’ā·ḏām)Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 120: Ruddy, a human beingallוְכָל־ (wə·ḵāl)Conjunctive waw | Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 3605: The whole, all, any, everythe birdsע֥וֹף (‘ō·wp̄)Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 5775: Flying creaturesof the skyהַשָּׁמַ֖יִם (haš·šā·ma·yim)Article | Noun - masculine pluralStrong's 8064: Heaven, skyhad fled.נָדָֽדוּ׃ (nā·ḏā·ḏū)Verb - Qal - Perfect - third person common pluralStrong's 5074: To wave to and fro, to rove, flee, to drive awayJump to PreviousAir Beheld Bird Birds Fled Flight Flown Fowl Fowls Heaven Heavens Sky
