Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(9, 10) Deceive not yourselves . . .--Literally, Deceive not your souls. The words indicate that the king and his counsellors had buoyed themselves up with expectations of deliverance. The chariots and horses of Egypt were, they thought, certain to defeat the Chaldaeans in a pitched battle. The prophet tells them, in the language of a bold hyperbole, reminding us of Isaiah 30:17, that even the wounded remnant of the Chaldaean army should be strong enough to accomplish the purpose of Jehovah in the destruction of Jerusalem.Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewThis is whatכֹּ֣ה ׀ (kōh)AdverbStrong's 3541: Like this, thus, here, nowthe LORDיְהוָ֗ה (Yah·weh)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3068: LORD -- the proper name of the God of Israelsays:אָמַ֣ר (’ā·mar)Verb - Qal - Perfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 559: To utter, sayDo notאַל־ (’al-)AdverbStrong's 408: Notdeceiveתַּשִּׁ֤אוּ (taš·ši·’ū)Verb - Hifil - Imperfect - second person masculine pluralStrong's 5377: To lead astray, to delude, to seduceyourselvesנַפְשֹֽׁתֵיכֶם֙ (nap̄·šō·ṯê·ḵem)Noun - feminine plural construct | second person masculine pluralStrong's 5315: A soul, living being, life, self, person, desire, passion, appetite, emotion by saying,לֵאמֹ֔ר (lê·mōr)Preposition-l | Verb - Qal - Infinitive constructStrong's 559: To utter, say‘The Chaldeansהַכַּשְׂדִּ֑ים (hak·kaś·dîm)Article | Noun - proper - masculine pluralStrong's 3778: Chaldeans -- a region of southern Babylon and its inhabwill go away for good,’הָלֹ֛ךְ (hā·lōḵ)Verb - Qal - Infinitive absoluteStrong's 1980: To go, come, walkforכִּי־ (kî-)ConjunctionStrong's 3588: A relative conjunctionthey will not!לֹ֖א (lō)Adverb - Negative particleStrong's 3808: Not, noJump to PreviousBabylonians Chaldaeans Chaldeans Chalde'ans Deceive Depart Hopes Leave Surely Thinking Yourselves
