Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(11) When Michaiah the son of Gemariah . . .--Gemariah himself was, as we find in the next verse, not one of the listeners, but took his place with the other princes, in the "scribe's chamber," probably used as a council-room, in the king's palace. It seems obvious from Michaiah's relation to him that his purpose in reporting Baruch's discourse was not unfriendly. Probably it was part of a preconcerted plan, arranged between the prophet and his friends, that he should report it, and so give an opening for bringing Baruch into the presence of the king and his counsellors, as they sat in what we may call their council-chamber.Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewWhen Micaiahמִכָ֨יְהוּ (mi·ḵā·yə·hū)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 4321: Micaiah -- 'Who is like Yah?' three Israelitessonבֶן־ (ḇen-)Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 1121: A sonof Gemariah,גְּמַרְיָ֧הוּ (gə·mar·yā·hū)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 1587: Gemariah -- 'Yah has accomplished', two Israelitesthe sonבֶן־ (ḇen-)Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 1121: A sonof Shaphan,שָׁפָ֛ן (šā·p̄ān)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 8227: A species of rockrabbit, the hyraxheardוַ֠יִּשְׁמַ֗ע (way·yiš·ma‘)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Consecutive imperfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 8085: To hear intelligentlyallכָּל־ (kāl-)Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 3605: The whole, all, any, everythe wordsדִּבְרֵ֥י (diḇ·rê)Noun - masculine plural constructStrong's 1697: A word, a matter, thing, a causeof the LORDיְהוָ֖ה (Yah·weh)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3068: LORD -- the proper name of the God of Israelfromמֵעַ֥ל (mê·‘al)Preposition-mStrong's 5921: Above, over, upon, againstthe scroll,הַסֵּֽפֶר׃ (has·sê·p̄er)Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 5612: A missive, document, writing, bookJump to PreviousBook Gemariah Gemari'ah Heard Heareth Hearing Micah Micaiah Micai'ah Michaiah Scroll Shaphan Words
