Ellicott's Commentary
Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(14) Put them in an earthen vessel . . .--We are reminded of the "earthen vessels" in which men kept their most precious treasures (2Corinthians 4:7). Such a vessel was obviously a better protection against damp or decay than one of wood, and was, as it were, the "safe" of a Jewish household. (See Note on Jeremiah 41:8.) In the "many days" we have an implied warning to the listeners that they were not to expect a speedy deliverance or restoration, however certain might be their assurance that it would come at last.Parallel Commentaries ...Hebrew“This is whatכֹּֽה־ (kōh-)AdverbStrong's 3541: Like this, thus, here, nowthe LORDיְהוָ֨ה (Yah·weh)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3068: LORD -- the proper name of the God of Israelof Hosts,צְבָא֜וֹת (ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ)Noun - common pluralStrong's 6635: A mass of persons, reg, organized for, war, a campaignthe Godאֱלֹהֵ֣י (’ĕ·lō·hê)Noun - masculine plural constructStrong's 430: gods -- the supreme God, magistrates, a superlativeof Israel,יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל (yiś·rā·’êl)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3478: Israel -- 'God strives', another name of Jacob and his descsays:אָמַר֩ (’ā·mar)Verb - Qal - Perfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 559: To utter, sayTakeלָק֣וֹחַ (lā·qō·w·aḥ)Verb - Qal - Infinitive absoluteStrong's 3947: To taketheseהָאֵ֡לֶּה (hā·’êl·leh)Article | Pronoun - common pluralStrong's 428: These, thosedeeds—הַסְּפָרִ֣ים (has·sə·p̄ā·rîm)Article | Noun - masculine pluralStrong's 5612: A missive, document, writing, bookboth the sealed copyהֶחָת֗וּם (he·ḥā·ṯūm)Article | Verb - Qal - QalPassParticiple - masculine singularStrong's 2856: To seal, affix a seal, seal upand theהַזֶּ֔ה (haz·zeh)Article | Pronoun - masculine singularStrong's 2088: This, thatopenהַגָּלוּי֙ (hag·gā·lui)Article | Verb - Qal - QalPassParticiple - masculine singularStrong's 1540: To denude, to exile, to revealcopyסֵ֤פֶר (sê·p̄er)Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 5612: A missive, document, writing, bookof theהַזֶּ֜ה (haz·zeh)Article | Pronoun - masculine singularStrong's 2088: This, thatdeedסֵפֶר֩ (sê·p̄er)Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 5612: A missive, document, writing, bookof purchase—הַמִּקְנָ֨ה (ham·miq·nāh)Article | Noun - feminine singularStrong's 4736: A buying, acquisition, a piece of property, the sum paidand put themוּנְתַתָּ֖ם (ū·nə·ṯat·tām)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Conjunctive perfect - second person masculine singular | third person masculine pluralStrong's 5414: To give, put, setin a clayחָ֑רֶשׂ (ḥā·reś)Noun - masculine singularStrong's 2789: Earthenware, earthen vessel, sherd, potsherdjarבִּכְלִי־ (biḵ·lî-)Preposition-b | Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 3627: Something prepared, any apparatustoלְמַ֥עַן (lə·ma·‘an)ConjunctionStrong's 4616: Purpose -- intentpreserve themיַעַמְד֖וּ (ya·‘am·ḏū)Verb - Qal - Imperfect - third person masculine pluralStrong's 5975: To stand, in various relationsfor a longרַבִּֽים׃ (rab·bîm)Adjective - masculine pluralStrong's 7227: Much, many, greattime.יָמִ֥ים (yā·mîm)Noun - masculine pluralStrong's 3117: A dayJump to PreviousArmies Business Continue Copies Deed Deeds Documents Earth Earthen Earthenware Evidence Evidences Hosts Israel Jar Kept Last Open Papers Purchase Rolled Sealed Stamped Time Unsealed Vessel Witness
