Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(3) Within two full years.--Literally, two years of days. Hananiah, not deterred by the previous warnings of Jeremiah, becomes bolder in the definiteness of his prediction. The conspiracy of Judah and the neighbouring states against Nebuchadnezzar was clearly ripening, and he looked on its success as certain. Prediction stood against prediction, and, as there were no signs or wonders wrought, men had to judge from what they knew of the lives of the men who uttered them which of them was most worthy of credit. The contest between the two prophets reminds us of Deuteronomy 18:20-22.Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewWithin two yearsשְׁנָתַ֣יִם (šə·nā·ṯa·yim)Noun - fdStrong's 8141: A yearIאֲנִ֤י (’ă·nî)Pronoun - first person common singularStrong's 589: Iwill restoreמֵשִׁיב֙ (mê·šîḇ)Verb - Hifil - Participle - masculine singularStrong's 7725: To turn back, in, to retreat, againtoאֶל־ (’el-)PrepositionStrong's 413: Near, with, among, tothisהַזֶּ֔ה (haz·zeh)Article | Pronoun - masculine singularStrong's 2088: This, thatplaceהַמָּק֣וֹם (ham·mā·qō·wm)Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 4725: A standing, a spot, a conditionallכָּל־ (kāl-)Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 3605: The whole, all, any, everythe articlesכְּלֵ֖י (kə·lê)Noun - masculine plural constructStrong's 3627: Something prepared, any apparatusof the houseבֵּ֣ית (bêṯ)Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 1004: A houseof the LORDיְהוָ֑ה (Yah·weh)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3068: LORD -- the proper name of the God of Israelthatאֲשֶׁ֨ר (’ă·šer)Pronoun - relativeStrong's 834: Who, which, what, that, when, where, how, because, in order thatKingמֶֽלֶךְ־ (me·leḵ-)Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 4428: A kingNebuchadnezzarנְבוּכַדנֶאצַּ֤ר‪‬ (nə·ḇū·ḵa·ḏ·neṣ·ṣar)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 5019: Nebuchadnezzar -- 'Nebo, protect the boundary', a Babylonian kingof Babylonבָּבֶל֙ (bā·ḇel)Noun - proper - feminine singularStrong's 894: Babylon -- an eastern Mediterranean empire and its capital cityremovedלָקַ֜ח (lā·qaḥ)Verb - Qal - Perfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 3947: To takefromמִן־ (min-)PrepositionStrong's 4480: A part of, from, out ofhereהַזֶּ֔ה (haz·zeh)Article | Pronoun - masculine singularStrong's 2088: This, thatand carriedוַיְבִיאֵ֖ם (way·ḇî·’êm)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Hifil - Consecutive imperfect - third person masculine singular | third person masculine pluralStrong's 935: To come in, come, go in, goto Babylon.בָּבֶֽל׃ (bā·ḇel)Noun - proper - feminine singularStrong's 894: Babylon -- an eastern Mediterranean empire and its capital cityJump to PreviousArticles Babylon Carried Full House LORD's Nebuchadnezzar Nebuchadnez'zar Removed Space Vessels Within
