Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(15) But know ye for certain.--Literally, with the Hebrew emphasis of reduplication, Knowing, know ye. The appeal is addressed, it will be remembered, to the lay judges, the princes, and the people, not to the priests and prophets who accused him. He believes that they at least would shrink from shedding innocent blood. And he solemnly protests that he is innocent of any wilful attack upon what his countrymen revered. He has spoken, but it has been by a constraint above his own will. A "necessity has been laid upon him" (1Corinthians 9:16).Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewButאַ֣ךְ ׀ (’aḵ)AdverbStrong's 389: A particle of affirmation, surelyknowיָדֹ֣עַ (yā·ḏō·a‘)Verb - Qal - Infinitive absoluteStrong's 3045: To knowfor certainתֵּדְע֗וּ (tê·ḏə·‘ū)Verb - Qal - Imperfect - second person masculine pluralStrong's 3045: To knowthatכִּ֣י (kî)ConjunctionStrong's 3588: A relative conjunctionifאִם־ (’im-)ConjunctionStrong's 518: Lo!, whether?, if, although, Oh that!, when, notyouאַתֶּם֮ (’at·tem)Pronoun - second person masculine pluralStrong's 859: Thou and thee, ye and youput me to death,מְמִתִ֣ים (mə·mi·ṯîm)Verb - Hifil - Participle - masculine pluralStrong's 4191: To die, to killyouאַתֶּם֙ (’at·tem)Pronoun - second person masculine pluralStrong's 859: Thou and thee, ye and youwill bringנֹתְנִ֣ים (nō·ṯə·nîm)Verb - Qal - Participle - masculine pluralStrong's 5414: To give, put, setinnocentנָקִ֗י (nā·qî)Adjective - masculine singularStrong's 5355: Clean, free from, exemptbloodדָ֣ם (ḏām)Noun - masculine singularStrong's 1818: Blood, of man, an animal, the juice of the grape, bloodshedupon yourselves,עֲלֵיכֶ֔ם (‘ă·lê·ḵem)Preposition | second person masculine pluralStrong's 5921: Above, over, upon, againstonוְאֶל־ (wə·’el-)Conjunctive waw | PrepositionStrong's 413: Near, with, among, tothisהַזֹּ֖את (haz·zōṯ)Article | Pronoun - feminine singularStrong's 2063: Hereby in it, likewise, the one other, same, she, so much, such deed, that, city,הָעִ֥יר (hā·‘îr)Article | Noun - feminine singularStrong's 5892: Excitementand onוְאֶל־ (wə·’el-)Conjunctive waw | PrepositionStrong's 413: Near, with, among, toits residents;יֹשְׁבֶ֑יהָ (yō·šə·ḇe·hā)Verb - Qal - Participle - masculine plural construct | third person feminine singularStrong's 3427: To sit down, to dwell, to remain, to settle, to marryforכִּי־ (kî-)ConjunctionStrong's 3588: A relative conjunctiontrulyבֶאֱמֶ֗ת (ḇe·’ĕ·meṯ)Preposition-b | Noun - feminine singularStrong's 571: Stability, certainty, truth, trustworthinessthe LORDיְהוָה֙ (Yah·weh)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3068: LORD -- the proper name of the God of Israelhas sentשְׁלָחַ֤נִי (šə·lā·ḥa·nî)Verb - Qal - Perfect - third person masculine singular | first person common singularStrong's 7971: To send away, for, outme to speakלְדַבֵּר֙ (lə·ḏab·bêr)Preposition-l | Verb - Piel - Infinitive constructStrong's 1696: To arrange, to speak, to subdueallכָּל־ (kāl-)Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 3605: The whole, all, any, everytheseהָאֵֽלֶּה׃ (hā·’êl·leh)Article | Pronoun - common pluralStrong's 428: These, thosewordsהַדְּבָרִ֖ים (had·də·ḇā·rîm)Article | Noun - masculine pluralStrong's 1697: A word, a matter, thing, a causein your hearing.?בְּאָזְנֵיכֶ֔ם (bə·’ā·zə·nê·ḵem)Preposition-b | Noun - fdc | second person masculine pluralStrong's 241: Broadness, the earJump to PreviousBlood City Death Ears Inhabitants Innocent Speak Surely Thereof Truth Words Yourselves
